I have replaced the 5400 30GB hard disc on my computer (An Athalon 1700XP on a K7S5a Motherboard, 512K DDR ram) with an 80GB 7200 unit.
Both driver were partioned to 4 drives using Powerquest Partion magic 7. The C: drive was copied to the new C: drive using Powrequest Driveimage 5: the other 3 drives were transferred across with select all, then copy, paste.
All the files are in place OK and can be accessed, but when ever I right click in a folder/window on the top three drives it takes between 9 and 15 seconds for a response. It was almost instant on the old drive.
I had expected it to be faster not so much slower as it is now. I have used Norton Utils 2002 with both speed disc and Windoctor, but this has not helped.
What should I be doing to get the quicker response back?
I am using Windows XP Pro.

it may be some trouble with the OS. i myself am using winxp.
i recognized, that this system is getting much, much slower
the older the installation is (also improper ones, not necessarily
old), or the more stuff i have installed on it. i recommend you
to completely format the system partition and reinstall windows.
you may backup your configuration data to another partition.
another hint: what filesystem are you using on your HDD? you
may defrag the system an shut the whole bloody
amount of graphical gimmicks in windows xp down...
optimize your system to performance. watch you
have not too many autostartup items. (Details: run:
msconfig)
have a look first, how your system does work after these modifications. i don't think there's something wrong with
your hardware.

what comes to my mind right now: make sure your new HDD
runs in UDMA mode 5 and not PIO 4!!

Before you decide to wipe your drive and reinstall. Check to make sure that your power saving setting in bios are set to none. That would cause a delay if the hard drive has to power back up. Also check your settings in power management in the control panel.
Give that a shot....Nobody likes rebuilding their hard drive from scratch.:(

It's not practical to do a clean install. I have a lot of programs that are regularly used, would take me more than a month just in installing time (never mind finding all the correct installation discs again).
All drives are formatted with NTFS.
Most "gimmick" settings are turned off. If I right click on the C: drive (partition 1) I get a response straight away whichever folder I am in. But the delay occurs on all the other 3 partions (no delay when accessing the two SCSI hard discs either). So not a global setting problem.
Norton Speeddisc is defragging as far as I am aware, and that has been done.
Autostart items again down to minimum.
Power savings are off (in anycase it is one physical drive with four partions so why would partion 1 work fast but not the other three? the disc is already up and running.)
It is as if XP keeps a log of the contents of drive C: yet has to check all the details for the other three partitions before responding to the right mouse click.
Any more ideas as this is frustrating.
