Hi :t
I was wondering why AMD did not put any thermal protection on any of it's CPU's until now. I have seen the video from Toms Hardware which shows what happens when the heatsink is removed for Pentium 4 and 3, AMD MP and Athlon.
I wouldn't want my heatsink to fall off by accident and then find my CPU going up in smoke.
I liked the when the P4's heatsink was taken off, the game Quake 3 just went slower and once the heatsink was placed back on it went faster. I have to congratulate Intel for there increable technology.

That and the chipping core syndrome is what convinced me to go to all pentium machines....:D
Watch out it's coming....

Perhaps becasue the chance of having your heatsink fall off is really low. Also AMD is starting now with the t-bred and some kind of thermal protection. But not many motherboards are supporting it. I beleive AMD released a press statment saying that if the motherboards dont have it by like july 9th or around there they will no longer reccomend the compaines.
I have never broked a core of an AMD chip, I have used a lot of AMD chips it is really very easy to put on a heatsink without crushing the core.

The Amd core is not sealed you got ta be careful when you install heat sink.

I know but if you read the warning it says "Do not applie downward pressure when appling heatsink.
Just slip on one of the brackets, then tack your screwdriver and oush on the other to put it on. Easy as cake.
A lot was said about this video (plus the "tendancy" of THG to like Intel products more  )
However, thermal protection of P4 is really impressive, I wish AMD had something like this for a long time ...
Yet, the chances your HS/F will fall off is sooooo low ...

Actually, AMD AthlonXP CPU has thermal protection, but it was not designed to register huch hich temperature jumps...

Thats right what are the chances of your heatsink falling off? Not very good odds. I wonder how many people it has actually happened to. I don't think many.

And yet, I beat the odds. The first 1.4 Tbird I bought last year(purchased as a combo) broke a tab the 2nd day. Fried CPU and Mobo in seconds. It shore looked funny hanging there.
Wish IWere I so lucky in Vegas.:(

You are the first ( I think) I have ever heard it happineing to.
However did this combo come with the heatsink and chip already installed? If so mabey during shipping it got knocked around too much and was weakend a lot.

transport /shipping their a lot of things happened inside the box,,, card is been pop – out in the slot , heat sink is already in other corner of your board or processor out in the socket , fan fall, and the worst of all if you receive jigsaw puzzle system board beyond recognition .
How about love at the top, can loose everything also.

Actually, I bought it locally, and the tech at the Mom and Pop operation put the HS and chip on for me. I just picked it up there and installed the board into the case. They were fair and assumed responsibility, but I don't know if the mounts were cracked or it had been put under too much pressure. No problems since, and it has never happened to a HS I've mounted to a chip myself. Yet.;)

AMD has had the sensor for a while, but it requires the motherboard manufacturer's to use it. I think it costs them extra to add this feature, so they don't do it. Good news for new AMD buyers, though. AMD is requiring all new motherboard designs have thermal sensing enabled.
The chances are very unlikely that a heatsink will fall off. The chances of you getting hit by lightning are pretty slim too, but it does happen. Better safe than sorry. :D

Ok thanks guys,
Hopefully I could buy an new motherboard when I get a new CPU like AMD XP 1800+, Cause if the heatsink falls of what a waste of money on the CPU.
