I have a HP 9150i CDRW. I have made a few music CD using Imatation music CDR's and they sound perfect. The problem I'm having is when i make the CD's, the HP program only show I have 73.5 minutes of CD time when I'm using 80 min CDR's. The programs that came with the CDRW are: Roxie (adaptec) Direct CD, HP My CD, and the utilities.
Another question; I know you have to format a CD to make the Direct CD work, but do you have to format to make a music cd or data cd?

Thanks for the replies. I don't have the EZ CD Creator, just the Hewlett Packard software and the Direct CD. I read the manual from head to toe and haven't found any controls to set the size of CD. When i'm done making a music CD, there is enough room (going by the minutes of the cd (80)) for another song. So why does this software see only 73.5 minutes on a 80 minute CD? The drive supports 80 minute CD's according to the manual.

My Sony Spressa USB CDRW does the same thing ....shows their is not 80 minutes of record time ....no error messages though, if I hit record it makes a perfect copy of all tracks up to 80 minutes. So as long as it works it can say whatever it wants...

Well, the problem here is your actual burners!

Most CD-Writer`s can only burn 74 minutes. some software shows slightly less (ie, 73.5 minutes), but that is still 74 minutes!

You can get Writers that will burn the full 80 minutes, but they are expensive! Also, I have seen software (sorry, can`t remember the links) that allow you 74 minute burner to burn 80 mins instead. Of course, this is OVERBURNING, and you drive may die while doing this.

74 min discs are for 74 min writers, and 80 min discs are for 80 min writers. If you ain`t got an 80 min writer, don`t buy 80 min discs!

On another note, if you an get 80 min discs real cheap, you shouldn`t have any probs burning them as 74 min discs. But i presume that that extra 6 mins may reduce quality slightly. Dunno really? anyone else got any idea`s on that?

All the best!

TD.

Rat...if your 9150 is like my 9100, that IS EZCD Creator 3.5c. They have just incorporated it in with HP's own software. If you have to convert MP3's to wav files before you can list them as tracks to be burned on the program, that is 3.5c. If the program will let you list MP3's as tracks and then convert them automatically to wav as it burns, it is likely to be 4.0 or later.

Dud,
I don't use MP3's, so i don't know.

Techi,
This drive is supposed to be compatible with 80 min CD's, so I think it's the proggy that is limiting me.

Are there any proggy's I can use other than what came with this drive?

the answer is here:

NOTE: The audio layout portion of the HP MyCD application restricts audio creation to the 74 minute standard.

found here:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40817.html

at the end! So 80min are usable for data (700MB) but only 74min will be recorded for audio.

Dump your software and get NERO. I have a HP 7570 & have no problems burning 80 mins of audio. Have used NERO (W2K) in the past, but now do all my burning under Linux with X-CD-Roast.

Direct CD is a seperate program. But if you're using Easy CD Creator, in pattern (or layout) burning, you do not have to format the discs. They are preformatted for it.

My first spindle was Imiation. Now I just use anything that's on sale. I've made some coasters due to errors on my part, but only one from a defective disc out of 200.

Rat...is that EZCD Creator 3.5c? If so, after you have completed adding the tracks using the wizard, it may tell you to delete some because you are over 74 minutes. Just close the wizard at that point, click on the red record button, and select the appropriate settings (how fast, TAO or DAO, etc.). Go ahead and burn your audio CD. You will still be able to use the jewel case label.

Thanks for the replies all, D/L and tried Nero.... works good. Price tag is high ($65.00 US), so I don't know if I'll buy it when the trial period is over.
