New to the Message board but read the post when I have down time at work.

It seems that I have a CPU temp problem. I have an Athlon XP1700, not OCed. The system seems to run fine but when I check the temp is 134 F degrees idel and gets up to 154 degrees F when I play RTCW or Quake. My systems has a GF3 ti200 not OCed, 256mb DDR, Nic card 3Com,SB Live Plat. 40x CDR, and a 48x CD Rom. I have 1 fan for intake at the front of the case and 2 for exhaust in the rear of the case. My power supplie is an Antec 400W. I use a Alpha Pal 6035 heat sink with Artic Silver 3. Any suggestions on how to get the Temp down. I know that the XP's run hot but this seems a little to hot to me. I have seen some people here post that there temps are around 34 degrees C Idel with Artic Silver. Any suggestions?????? I have tried every thing that I can think of.

Welcome to Sysopt.

Take the hs/f off clean off the silver and reapply again with only a very thin layer if you put too much on it doesn't help sometimes doing it again will make a better seat. How's the fan working? Might try a stronger fan if putting it on again doesn't help.

hi, What is the air temp in the case compared to the CPU temp.
and you had not said what type of M/B you are using either, maybe put a probe temp on it and see what it say.

I have an XP-1700 and right now it is
Lower Case: 21.0 c or 69.8 f
Upper Case: 27.3 c or 81.14 f
System : 32 c or 89.6 f
CPU: 36 c or 96.8 f

You could also check to see if the heatsink is sitting flush on the CPU. If it's lying at an angle then that could cause it to overheat....

The mother board is an Asus A7v266-E. I will reseat the heat sink on the CPU. The fan on the heat sink runs around 4600 rpms Idel and runs a little faster when the heat goes up. The case Temp I could not tell you because I do not have a probe in the case. Thanks for 4 all tyhe suggestions. I will repost after I reseat the heat sink.

I use to run that same heatsink with my Tbird 1.333 processor, except I had a loud 7k RPM delta fan mated to it. Unfortunatly though, whenever the processor was running at full load for several hours in a row, it would get too hot and lock up. I eventually replaced that HSF, with a coolmaster HCC-01 and replaced the case with one that has a fan on the side pannel blowing air right over the HSF, and the problem has since went away. That processor can run at full load 24/7 without a problem.

might have something to do with the mobo temp sensors. i ve read that asus boards give very unaccurate temp readings. my xp 1500,with fsb up from 133 to 152,sys temp is 89F and cpu temp is 118F running at 100% with the UD agent,24/7. (32C system and 47 C cpu)

Yeah, I've heard about that too. If you're using Asus Probe to check your temps, you might want to compare them to the temps you get in bios.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I reseated the heat sink and I'm still have the same temps no changes. Any suggestions on a different heat Sink????? I see that the SGT. suggested the Valcano 7+. Well :t for now.
