today i installed a new heatsink on my geforce 4! and also a fan bracket which is connected to the screw which are in ur PCI slots. the bracket is quite big. u connect a fan to the bracket, so it cools the heatsink on the geforce 4. (pics/for silent cooling http://www.quietpc.com) > ANYWAY after installing everything i tried booting!!!!!!! ahhhhh whats happening!!!!!!!!!!!! SCREEN DOESNT COME ON!!!!!!!!
nnnnnnnnooooo
swicth of everything!
try again
monitor come on, but weird lines on monitor ahhhhhhhhhhhh
god me nearly cry me think i broke my beloved geforce 4 card! Noooooooo
me unscre everything me screw everything back again! me switch on maschine......................... IT WORKS
and why?????? now?
because the end of the fan bracked has this design on it """""|_ and the end bit touched some metal pins coming out of the geforce card, shortcircuting it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost had the same experience as you germanjulian. I gave myself a little project today after I realized that the stock hsf that came with my Elsa GeForce3 classic was no longer cutting it. I needed to squeeze a bit more out of it which meant better cooling. I went down to my local vendor and picked up a Tt Crystal Orb and sped home.

I popped off the stock hsf and noticed some generic thermal paste. It looked as if my gpu was sweating, but I still had some leftover Arctic Silver 3 that I could use for thermal transferrence. I had already sized up the Crystal Orb and knew there would be clearance for it. What I didn't realize was that the actual pin holes were on the small size. After a few tools and gripping the video card every which way (leaving prints everywhere). I managed to put the cooler on. The moment of truth was coming. Normally, I let the compound set a while, but I needed to know if my video card will work after the manhandling I gave it. Crossed my fingers, chanted a bit and press the power on button. Yes! I saw the video come up and all is well. Kids don't try this at home. Let a professional handle it (heh, that's me). :D :x
