I'm certain this has probably been asked before in some form but here it goes again!

Just about to move from PIII to PIV - ECS mobo with Via chipset to Supermicro with Intel chipset. I'm wondering what procedure to use to ensure that all old VIA drivers are removed from my HD especially seeing that untidy disposal may leave to VXD links which causes windows to hang on boot. I know that according to VIA, I should run the install program and uninstall from there, but this isn't exactly the best written bit of code in the world and I don't trust it to do it's job properly. Am I right to assume that by removing the PCI bus listing in device manager, rediscovery of the chipset should install the correct bits, most of my concerns are with AGP & HD busmaster controllers. I want to avoid a reformat of my drive as everything runs as sweet as a nut at present.

The only way to ensure that the system "runs as sweet as a nut at present" is to not upgrade.

Any major upgrade such as P3 to P4, new motherboard, new RAM, etc you run the risk of a serious OS error and a full install again. Do you honestly think that a P3 to a P4 upgrade is worth it?

Cheers Sterling_Aug -

I got a good deal on a board and CPU (in British terms anyway)

I realise there is a risk to the upgrade as I have attempted a 'sideways' move before which required OS re-install, and that was VIA to VIA chipset!! Just wondered if there is a more foolproof way of attempting the task, or if cos it's a different chipset, intel's stuff will just pop on comfortably pushing VIA out!?

When I do something as drastic as changing out the whole Mobo/Cpu/Ram, I invaribly install a fresh copy of Windows. It's the only way to be sure of a clean OS.

All, cheers for advice - totally unheeded ;) Everything went smoothly without OS re-install - surprised?...I am!
