Can any one please explain me what is the meaning of RAID or IDE RAID? How it is used and what r the benefits of it? How to enable this? And other hardware required? Performance Difference?.... etc etc

RAID(Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is a hardrive utility that requires the proper Harware and software. It enables one to do such things as combine multiple hard drive into on giant harddrive. There are many different Levels when it comes to RAID devices.

look here for more info http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/R/RAID.html

Thanks 4 ur replies. This means that i have to purchase a IDE RAID card or it hould be a inbuilt feature in my mobo. Do newer mobo have these features in it. Does the MSI 845 Ultra-C have this as i m planing to purchase it for my upgradation.
If i hae to purchase the card what is the estimated prices of the card.

I can't find an 845 Ultra-C.

Will it be Pentium or AMD?

You should get RAID built-in if you want it. A card will cost almost $100.

845
Looks like "Intel Inside" to me  ;)

I just cannot find that model in the North America group. Follow the link.

Favorites>>Daily>>Google>>pasted "MSI 845 Ultra-C" first hit http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/845ultra_c.htm :p

No onboard raid so if you want raid and are going to buy a new board anyway I would recommend you buy one with an on-board controller.

I agree. RAID added to a motherboard as a feature adds only about $20US where a card will cost you 3 times that at least.

Ya i had find the mobo on the MSI website. Well i have a 20GB Samsung HDD. But in next 2-3 month i m going to have a major upgrade in my PC(I m having a PII 350 with 256 MB RAM). So i m planing to purchase a 80GB HDD. Asking for RAID was just for curiosity purpose. I want to know how much does a RAID helps.
Another thing which motherboard dou u recomend for AMD as well as Intel with good features, Performance and price (this one matter a lot).

It depends...which CPU speeds are we talking about?

Duron/Celeron/Athlon/Pentium4?

DDR/SDRAM?

Well there is a huge confusion between P4 or an AMD Athlon XP. For a P4 i would like to go with RDRAM. I got to know today only that DDR is more expensive than RDRAM here in INDIA these days. Its is about $40 for RDRAM 128MB and $50 for DDR 128MB Stick.
The problem is that the mobo of RDRAMs r expensive than the mobos of DDRs.
But please can give info about both. I m thinking to start a new thread reguarding my problem and confusion as this one is located in Data storage.

Harshu, there is tons of data on RDRAM vs. DDR all over the internet. I'm not going to rehash it here again. You can search SysOpt for the same information.

Basically, no RAM is going to stay current. Whatever you buy today will be obsolete in a year. RDRAM will have a slightly longer "shelf life". They are both fast.

Which are you interested in - AMD or Intel?

BipolarBill my biggest problem is weather i should go with AMD or Intel. I m usin Intel for last 3 yrs. Some experience with AMD which is not good at all. Still the performace and price of AMD.
Well basically i will work with graphics (2D - 3D), Video Editing, Sound Editing, Illustrations and similar kind of works related t multimedia.
Which processor u would recomend me or which one u will purchase i u r at my place.

Right now, I would get AMD in the 1.5-2.0GHz range. Below or above that I would get Intel - Tualatin 1.2 and 2.2 Northwood/DDR or RDRAM. The Northwoods are expensive and would give me pause, but they are very desirable - for any use.

You can't, however, beat the deal on AMD w/VIA motherboards and DDR333. They flat rock for the money.

Ok tell me one thing which one is better to have a 19" Flat Screen Moniter or a Dual Processor system.
I know both r poles apart thing still i have to make a choice between them. Either a 19" moniter or a Dual Processor Mobo (not the dual processor second processor in future). Actually i m having a 15" moniter and working o higher resolution is difficult. So i m upgrading it to a 17" F&FST moniter. But then i thought to go 4 19" one but now i m confused between a 19" moniter or a Dual setup.
How much diference does a dual processor give in the field i want ie multimedia.

RAID(Redundant Array of Independent Disks)
Hey Nick! Could the people at Microsoft be messing with me??? cause in my MSCE training guide I am told RAID = (redundant array of inexpensive disks ) ...swear to the matrix, it's right there in chapter1. page 45, paragraph 2.

How independent is one disk in a mirrored pair? A striped disk? This time, MS is right.

Harshu...get the 19" display and get a good one. Dual-CPUs are a waste for home use.

Independent or Inexpensive can both be used :)
