Hi,

in a moment of idiotic thoughtlessness, I deleted a folder of important work from a CD-RW. I suspect that there's nothing I can do to recover it. Please tell me that I'm wrong!

Once you remove data from an optical drive, there is no "residue" of your data. On magnetic media, the sectors are just marked so that you can write over them, but your data may still be there. That's where utilities like Lost & Found come in. In your case, the data is gone with the wind. :(
