my friend is having problems again with their usb..
the motherboard supports 4 usb ports. 2 ports on the front of the system work fine. the 2 in back don't work at all.
i changed it from sis to universal and it's still having problems picking up usb devices.
he had problems with a usb printer being picked up in the back but it works fine in front. now he has an ms intellimouse explorer which picks up in front but not in back.
any suggestions?
ps. have also downloaded the sis usb patch for win xp
his current setup: athlon 1.4ghz, 256mb sdram, windows xp

You're not supposed to use a "universal" driver. You're supposed to change them to "Standard OpenHCI controller".
Do you see both controllers in Device Manager?

Go into Device manager and uninstall all the USB devices and reboot the system. XP will reinstall them for you.
Check in the bois and make sure they are enabled too.

is it an epox 8kha or 8kha+ with a oc`d fsb?? read somewhere that upping the fsb on those boards raises havoc with usb reliability.

Have your friend unplug all USB devices and run the XP repair. Boot from the CD and choose Setup > F8 > Install > Repair.

I have a sis based motherboard and for me to keep USB installed and working I had to disable "USB support for Dos" in bios. Just a thought.

That's always a good idea. Sam's Club has USB 2.0 cables by the pair for about $10.
