awful lot of work when you can buy another mobo for about $35 and a case for $20?

- start with a floppy drive, the mobo and memory and a video card

some thoughts:

make sure you have power (fan working, etc.)
install the mobo with and without grounding it to the case - some forums say this makes a difference
try to clear the bios, etc.
make sure your video card is seated securely
make sure the power, reset, other case connectors are in the right place on the mobo?

i'd definitely try the power switch for the case. if it's an ATX motherboard with an ATX power supply, you can short the pins on the motherboard with a screwdriver to see if it'll boot. if it does, your switch is bad. also try clearing your cmos; i replaced a motherboard once and it wouldn't boot up until i did that because the values for the voltage on the cpu weren't right.

It is not bad idea to check your on/off swich.

Find where is on/off swich connected to MB.
For start remove all other connected stuff.
Remove swich connection and short-conect pin's for moment with any conductor you can find.

If it starts then your swich is no good.

Second idea will be to remove all hardware from box and connect everything on your table. It is possible that your box is connected to MB on some place which is short-conecting your PC.

If it runs, trye to isolate MB from box, sometimes it is not easy to see where are they connected.

If your BIOS have autodetection of CPU it is good idea to reser it, as you are already suggested from other's.

While testing PC DO NOT connect anything which is not necesery for boot. Unplug, cd-rom, fdd, hdd, modems, Sblasters and all other things. After you boot for first time, you can plug one by one thing and find out which one is broken,

Good luck
