ok how many people knew they can change there hard drives setting so that it runs quite when seeking?!!! (most newer hard drive models)
My IBM Deskstar used to be so loud when searching MP3 and now that i changed the settings i can hardly hear it!!!
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm
IBM Feature Tool (version 1.50) the program is called. It worked with my Maxtor drive as well!!!!!

this is what it can do:
The IBM Feature Tool allows you to control some of the features in the newer IBM high performance ATA hard disk drives. Version 1.5 adds support for the latest IBM drives. The IBM Feature Tool allows you to:
Enable or disable the read-ahead or write cache.
Change the drive Automatic Acoustic Management settings to the:
Lowest acoustic emanation setting (Quiet Seek Mode), or
Maximum performance level (Normal Seek Mode).
Change the predefined capacity of the drive. This option can be used in situations where there is a BIOS limitation and the drive is not recognized. See the Users Guide for specific details.
Switch the Ultra DMA mode (replaces the IBMATASW utility)
Change Advanced Power Mode - allows you to change between the lowest power consumption and the highest power consumption (maximum performance level).
Show Drive Temperature - shows the current drive temperature in Celsius and Farenheit.

of course i know that my drive performence is a bit slower now! but its fats enough anyway, especially with over 700MB or ram

hmm ibm is a bit behind huh? most companies have this already :\

i guess not many people know since most people like reliable drives like western digital and seagate :O

if you make your IBM HD silent does that mean you won't hear your click of death??

yeah they did have this silencing feature! it just wasnt switch on for some reason. I think most hard drives have this feature just on, which will make the seek times slower! but who cares? well i dont heheh :t

click of death???? it doesnt do the loud clicking noises no more!?

"click of death???? it doesnt do the loud clicking noises no more!?"

No he ment the sounds commenly heard as the head crashes or hits the platter. Another infamous sound is the bearings going which is a whine or a chatter gritty sound. Your talking about when its seeking and the head is ripping back and forth quickly. Thats normal while the others are a near death sign. Seek time is the biggest determination of overall speed of a HDD. RPM's directly effect seek time and that is one of the prob.s They always set it to max performance by default not quiet mode. For obvious reasons. Anyhow Maxtors been doing it a while now. It under my Intel app. accel that I can switch it.:)
