Have you installed any software that eats up a lot of CPU and RAM. Do you have extra "spyware" programs running in the back.

Lastly just for the sack of it to a Virus scan.

Viruses can do anything and everything now-a-days. :(

No, I have not.

but winlogon.exe steals some cpu when i game..but that program should be there (win2000)..I have not any viruses according to mc Affé, northon, avx and so on.

Now i notice that my games are lagging a little bit when i gameing.

Maybee i will reinstall windows..hm

Somthing must have installed it self or somthing along those lines.

Try running adaware and see if you have any spyware on your computer.

You dont happen to have kazaa do you?

I think a "clean" install would do best. So format your drive when you do it.

Note everything on that drive will be gone

How long have you had your system running? Did you originally build it yourself? The reason I ask is sometimes, integrators put too much thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink so the tranferrence of heat is not efficient. This is noticeable when gaming for awhile. When you first boot up your system, its starting out "cold" and so buildup of heat is not an issue. A pc can usually attain its highest benchmark at this time. However, under heavy gaming, heat builds up very quickly and cause some instability issues by way of losing frames, lockups or crashes.

You could try a clean install of Windows and see what happens. Hopefully, its not the case I described above and that its more of a driver issue. Or it may be you need to pop the hsf off the cpu and apply a thinner coat of thermal paste for better heat transferrence. Your situation reminds me of what I've seen from others in the past.

No kidding :P

I´ve installed win2k on a other drive to check..and the system seams to work just fine now :D

I better format my primary disk and reinstall again, it must have been som virus or conflict the caused the lag.
How much dose 3dmark depend on fast harddrives ? I´m thinking of upgrade my 5400rpm to U160 scsi, software raid.

Thanks for all the help ;>)

Hey alright glad it is working. I dont think 3dmark is ver dependant on Harddrive speed. Overever you would see a nice difference in loading of windows, apps, and game with a new SCSI harddrive.

3dmark is more dependant of Video card, CPU, and RAM

:)

Is there any diffrence between windows 2k and win98 that will affect the result ?

Or in the pro or non pro version of 3dmark2k1 ?

(Haunting the last point)

I´ve have had the system going for about 4months, and for some weeks ago, I formated the harddrive. I build the system myself but i dont think its to much thermal paste between the cpu and heat sink beucade the cpu temp is about 33-35C depending on the out side temp.

I just installed windows on a new drive and it ran fined, but no the score has droped -300 :/

Im thinking of formate the entier harddrive and not just a partion, and this time I wont install windows2000, maybee its some thing wrong with that distro.

Well you may have lost some points if installing 2k rolled back some drivers to origional versions.

I installed win me and it runs just fine :)

My score is about 200 higher then normal in windows 2000, it now lays on 6296 with the old via4in1 and ati drivers..I will update them to se if there is any differance.

Ati just released new drivers today (13`th) for ati 8500 me/9x :D

You have to love the “re-install windows” to fix it solution. If it were an upgrade from a previous version of windows then I would suggest it.

I would suspect heat is the problem because you said "it run nice for about 3-7mins". Run something to monitor the temps while gaming to see how hot it gets. Blow out all the dust. Double check all the BIOS settings and make sure they are tweaked for your video card. Defrag drive. Run a registry cleaner. Kill all processes that are not needed while gaming. Install the latest or best available drivers. Install SP2 for W2K. Try some of the tweaks for W2K at http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/ Make sure you have DX 8.1 installed.

It is not uncommon for w2k to score a bit lower than 98 but overall it is a much better and more stable OS.

When in doubt re-install windows. :p

I´ve installed the latest ati8500 drivers and I got a score witch is about 200 lower then with the old ati8500 driver...strange.

Yhea, win2k is far more stable then any other windowza.. :D
but not stable enough. I have free bsd installed on a other disk :)

i have the same problem sometime! MY d3 mark drops by 2000points sometimes! restart windows and it works again!???!!!!!! i think it is a 3d mark problem

gibsinep

remember that newer doesnt always mean better for 3dmark. So it makes sense that older drivers score better then newer. Thats why it takes a lot of different driver trying to find the right one for your system and 3dmark.

Yhea..when you restart windows, you release your RAM..and i think thats why you get the better result the first time.
