I installed a new floppy drive on a older box that is a NEC Ready 9618. When I try to tranfer files from my newer machine to the older machine, trying to open any files other than text files,it gives me a pop that says it can not read from device. Any floppy formated on the older machine and has files tranfered to that floppy,it is read perfectly by the new machine. What is the problem? Both machines have Win98se installed so it can not be a OS compatibility problem. The old machine does handle all files that it has transfered to the floppy and can read them, I have the problem only when trying to tranfer files from the new machine to the older machine. If more detailed info is needed, please advise. TIA

One of the FDDs is out of tolerance (or both are out in opposite directions). The new one is the likely suspect.

Theory: It's easier for a misaligned head to read a properly written track than for an aligned head to read a misaligned track.

You'll have to do some tests with a third drive to see which really is bad.
