Ok this is kind of strange. I just repaired a gateway computer where the motherboard was dead(Pentium II 450) . The computer had a power supply with the CPU fan attached to it. coming out of the power supply was a small cable pluged into the motherboards CPU fan socket. I figured this was powering the CPU/Powersuply fan. HOwever, When I Unplugged the cable from the motherboard the fan continued to spin at full speed. THis is the only fan in the case.
Did the cable fry the motherboard. It had been hooked up for quite a while because I don think the computer has ever been worked on.
Thanks for any help.

The cable that goes to what looks like the CPU fan connection is really going to a psu fan connection. They are often in close proximity.
What is the CPU fan connected to?

Usually that plug is used to monitor the power supply fan via the bios. Are you sure it said "cpu" on the socket? that might have messed up the board.:D

There is only ONE (1) fan in the whole system.(There u It works with or without the plug. I do not think it harmed anything(There was a thunderstorm) but it is just odd.

The system seems to be running fine after intense Burn-in. I still have no clue what the extra fan plug is for. IT is really strange.

In some systems, a second lead to the CPU fan is a way to adjust the fan speed. In your case, I'd imagine that the PSU has a temperature sensor which reduces CPU fan speed when temps drop. What do you think?

That makes sense. Thanks Bill
