It also adds support for Microsoft's new Mira technology, a set of Windows CE .NET-based technologies for smart display devices like detachable, wireless mobile flat-screen monitors and digital televisions. Also included is support for Freestyle, a new user interface to give consumers access to their music, videos and photos from anywhere in a room and to deliver TV on the PC.

So what... Microsoft is now "allowing" us lowly end-users to uninstall/delete/remove some of their established software only to replace these with other software not included in the settlement with the "almighty" DOJ??! The DOJ is NOT looking out for us low-lifes(end-users), they are entirely on the side of BIG-BUSINESS. Big-Business duking it out amongst themselves all because of professional envy... wow, hold on, M$ is getting way too big and rich and powerful, let's get the hounds at the DOJ going on them on the pretense of "helping the consumer"... yeah, what ever. All of us geeks here at Sysopt are smart enough to realize this, but all we can do is eat the scraps that fall off the table-of-battle between M$ and DOJ... .

I wonder if microsoft realizes that some of us lowly end users don't want any of this BS. All I want is a fast operating system that is compatible with the majority of the software available today. If I want a messanger service, i'll install the one that "I" choose, not the one that they want me to install. Microsofts Explorer for example, I don't/didn't and never will want to use it, and it's a royal pain to make it go away. Service pack 1 whenever it comes out shouldn't "allow" us the option of removing this stuff, it should remove it completely and give windows xp a much needed diet.

I wouldnt go out and pay for programs from real networks or netscape or any other software maker that is making software that i can get with windows. However i wouldnt mind the ability to have software from these companies right on the windows cd then have an option to install either real quicktime or winmedia. I think that this will solve nothing because the only reason that microsft is so big is because it made itself that way by making better products and setting a higher standard and if i have to give up all the added stuff that microsft gives me that works just as good or better than 3rd party programs like realplayer or navigator then i meswell not even buy a computer considering the fact that i would end up with a bunch of software that would cost me more that 3 copies of windows.

That is the way to win. Just because buisness is life and anything that microsoft could of done 10 years ago could of been done by any one else. Its not like microsft ever had an advantage. The only rules dictating buisness are the same rules that dictate life.
It is simple you have three runners and if one of them trained better or has bigger muscles he will win. Microsoft simply did better and now everyone is going to cry and be jealous of Bill heck without microsft the US would barely be able to even call it self part of the computer world. And as if any of need the kind of money bill has anyway plus he give alot of it to charity so it really doesnt matter. One more thing how many of you think your actually getting ripped off by MS think about you can pick up an OEM copy of winxp for less than you can get just 2 games and it comes with a free Internet Browser, a all purpose media player, photoediting software, video editing software, 100s of drivers, more compatibility than apple or linux, games, networking support, tons of utilities designed to make your computer easier to use, its own firewall, built in internet sharing, many accessability features, 3 text editors, a email client, a messeging service, and not to mention this all works flawlessly on a near perfect OS. Now whos ripping you off, Adobe, Real, Apple, Yahoo, AOL, and the list goes on.

While I have to agree w/ the SHUDDER, I would also say that I have to agree with that statement, to a point. While it's true that microsoft may have set a higher standard, its their business practices that make a lot of us dislike them, not to mention that even microsoft's standards are high enough. All these "features" that windows comes with are giving microsoft an unfair advantage because your less computer savy users are not going to even consider downloading/purchasing different software because they don't see the point in doing so because the operating system that they just bought and installed kindly came with all that software, not knowing that there may be better software out there.

As far as Microsoft being the reason that the US is even a figure in the computer world, I don't buy that one bit, sure Microsoft may be a key player, but I suspect that if they didn't exist, there would be even better software out there because open source apps and operating systems would've taken control and not have been pushed to the side. I want to eventually run a full LINUX machine and do away with all microsoft out there, which is very fesible.
