This is my first time to post here. My husband just finished building my computer and set it up for me. I've already jumped into a problem. When I was copying my document file, mostly word processing files, to my new computer a dialog box popped up for me to choose how to open the file. Some of the wpf were from an old Works program, some from Windows 98. I hit the wrong Icon and now I can not import any of my document files. It gives me this message: The document's format is invalid or not supported. Also the icon on the files are showin up as "Imaging for Windows" rather than a "Word" icon. I can't find anything in the troubleshooting to help me with this because I don't know what I am looking for. Can anyone help me. My husband may hurt me!!!! (Just kidding, but I do need some help)

You need to go to View in Explorer and select Folder Options. Under the File Types tab, scroll down the list of icons until it shows the extension yuo want to change. IN this case, it will be "DOC" showing up under an imaging for windows icon. Delete it. Don't worry, it won't kill all you files.
Now find a word file with the extension *.DOC and double-click on it. When the Open With window pops-up, scroll down until you find the program WINWORD. If it's not there, click the Other... button and browse until you find the program with which you wish to open the file, in this case word. It might be in C:\WINWORD or C:\MSOFFICE or a number of directories If you cn't find it, search for it with the Find application.
Hope this helps! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Another way to re-associate a file type to a program... in Explorer, do a single right click on the file you want to open while holding down <Shift> and choose "open with". Select the program you what to open the file with, and make sure to check the box that says "Always use this program to open this file"
