My 2 1/2 yr old Yamaha CRW8824E recently quit recognizing blank CDs. I use Adaptek Direct CD and CD Creator, and have burned quite a few CDs, including data file backups, copies of both music and SW CDs, and MP3 CDs. It will still read and play CDs, but when you put in a blank one, it just says that there is no CD present. I've used 3 different brands of media (Sony, Yamaha, Verbatim) and a generic, so I know it isn't the media.
I did install a freebie program a while back to stop web page 'popups', and had to remove it because my printer spooler wouldn't work after installing it. After that, the CDRW problem started. I downloaded a firmware upgrade and installed it, then had some messages re pop-up stack problems (Win98SE), but they went away after I cleaned my registry with System Mechanic. So far, I've tried removing and reinstalling both the Adaptek SW and the CDRW itself (uncabling, removing it from Control Panel, setting bios detect to none, and rebooting), then reinstalled Win98SE and finally, recabled the CDRW, reset bios to auto detect, and reinstalled Adaptek SW...no luck...All are reinstalled, but still won't recognize blank CDs.
Any suggestions??? I'd appreciate any help I can get. I sure would like to make some more MP3 CDs to play in my truck (got an Aiwa MP3 and love it). PS...the Adaptek SW was bundled w/my CDRW, and not purchased, so I may not have the full capability, but has worked great for over 2 years.
