In your opinion, which is based on the experience, what is the most stable version of Windows today? In terms of reliability, stability and performance

What's better, getting kicked in the face or punched in the crotch?

I have found no version of Windows to be to my liking, but I'd have to say that NT has given me the least grief of any of them. I believe 2000 is based on NT, so it may be better, I am not sure.

Yes Windows 2000 is the most stable version of Windows since all the apps run in their own memory space and should not overlap each other. Thus reducing memory conflicts with programs. The most important thing though is to get tested drivers for your hardware which will make the O/S more stable then Beta drivers (as with any O/S).

My vote goes for NT4.0 Workstation/Server and Win95b for the most stable.
2000 is stable but a bit finicky, I havent been able to harm NT yet with anything I do, cant say that for 2000.
I hear Whistler is working real good, I havent used but have heard from some who are.

I've always come back to 98se. I've tried W2K but got tired of idea of having to buy different components to BECOME compatible with OS! Universal drivers should be a reality.

I'd like to try Linux, but I think I'd have to buy new apps...?

Definetly NT4 or Win2K without a second thought among the MS OS's! I'm using Win2K now and it has been quite stable, no complaints here! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif As for Win9x and ME, I'd rather not talk about it if you know what I mean....

Hate to say it, but with my "antique" machine, win98 (FE) running 98lite "lean" version hasn't crapped out on me yet.

No more lock-ups (not that it probably won't happen...) but none for now.

Of course, I'll post tomorrow that I was down for half a day!

Just thought I'd throw my log on the fire too.

They're all stable. Its the poorly written "stuff" that gets installed afterwards that makes the OS UNstable http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I agree with Brangwen....

I like the way that NT handles memory, but my favorite has always been Windows 98 Second Edition...

They're all stable? Really? To a certain extent I would have to agree about poorly written programs causing Windows to become unstable, but Window has its own share of poorly written programming... Such as the OS itself! LOL http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Windows 2000 is the most stable that I have used.

I recently got copies of Windows 1.01, 1.03 and 2.03. How were those? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

widows is only as stable as the system it's installed in and the apps you have running in it.

Make sure your computer is runing right with good parts and drivers. And the applications you install in it are what you really need and work the correct way for what they are supposed to do and any version of windows can be a stable OS

WinNT or 98Lite gets my vote! On my computer at home, I haven't had any stability problems since I went the 98Lite route about 7 months ago. Previous to that, 98SE would crash on a regular basis. (Especially I.E. and Netscape with the Kernel32 Error message.)

I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. I use Win2k and find it to be very stable, and guess what? I can run any win9x game that I have tried so far in this box, and have no problems. I didn't have any problems with hardware either, my SBlive was installed immediatly and even the old 4 Meg vid card I first installed was found by Win2k.

I am trying to get BeOS installed on this P166 here at work. I will let you know when I do if it more stable than win2k.

I guess 2000 would be the most stable one, but has a lot of compatibility issues. Not only with hardware, but also with software (and games). That's a good reason for me not to use NT. So I use Windows 98 Second Edition. I have considered using ME, but when I see what problems it causes on my brother's, father's and my mother's computer...

I use Win95b on a P166, and IE (5.5) doesn't lock up any more than on my other computer... so I guess that's a good thing. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I'd have to go with W98SE for now, I had that running fine. Perhaps the fresh install of W2K will change my mind, been running 1 week with zero problems.

wyvrn,

Er, uh... w2k is based on the NT kernel, need I say more. Whatever happened to NT5 and active directory?

isnt that an oxymoron? well, anyway, i think Win2K is the most stable that i have used.

I wont start on the Linux bandwagon, and tell you how much more stable it is http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif That wasn't the question. ............

I would have to say that NT 4 (SP6a) is the most stable windoze to date. Yeah it's got some shortcomings with APM, USB & h/w support, but you can't beat it for stability.
(unless of course, you install Linux http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )

Windows 2000 advanced server is the most reliable windoze I have used yet, and I have used everything since 1.0 with the exception of 1.6 and nt 3.5! It needs lots of memory to be stable though, might have something to do with that thing it does where it gives everything its own memory space. It is rated at 128mb I think, but I run over 300 for reliability and photo shop.

Hi,
when i first installed w2k it had some problems with running out of memory, but since i now have 640megs, i find this o/s to be the most stable, actually the only stable o/s that i have had.

I believe the problem with win's stability is that Microsoft aren't honest with their memory requrements. Their code is inefficient and memory hungry take their browser for example, it takes IE 30mb to do what Opera does with 2 mb.
Back to the point,I have a pentium 200 with 128 of ram running win 95 at work. It's amazing in six months I've only had one lock up and that was when I was doing something stupid. With win98se, 256 ram and tbird 1 gig at home I get lockups although I do more multimedia with my machine there. Makes me wonder that probably 512 mb ram ensures stability for win98 and probably winme.
