I would like an explanation of modem strings and what they do. I had to replace a modem (external) with another external. The first had a modem string entered under advanced properties. How do I determine if I need one for the new modem. With the new modem, I do have connectivity problems. Error messages about unable to establish proper protocols or "you have been disconnected from the modem you dialed" before I get establish a connection. Would the correct modem string fix this? Shouldn't the install disk or utilities insert this if necesary?

did you just physically replace the old modem with the new one ?
if you "uninstall" the old one in the control panel then reboot once and then shut down and hook up the new one then "install" the new in the control panel windows will be much happier
it's probably confused and trying to use the old modem setup to control the new one
I did a remove first in device driver, than an uninstall in Control Panel and followed that up with Cleansweep. Then I added the new modem, and drivers per the instruction booklet. It is still connecting intermittently if using my browser or email program. DUN gets better results although not 100 percent. Thought maybe I needed a "Modem string" but don't really know what this does to or for a modem. What instructions does a string give the modem/pc?:: :(

Have you checked the phone line for noise?
Thanks for the sites. Learned a few new things! I didn't need the info though as per usual it was our one and only available ISP which was causing the problems. Now if I can only get email for one week straight I will be happy
