I log on with a password, but when I go to a folder and rt click/properties/sharing the option to make it private is greyed out.
I'm sure it's simple..I just cant find out where to enable password protection..
Thanks!

in windows 2000 you just have to edit what rights users can have over your folders and files, if you want it to be private, add your user name and give yourself full access and delete the other entries...

You have to convert to the NTFS file system:
CONVERT X: FS:NTFS in the Command console where X is the drive.

I am on NTFS...
I am the administartor, and have created a limited account for a family member. When logged in as administrtor the option to make the file private is greyed out..

He can encrypt the individual files in the folder, but he has no permissions for the folder itself. Try making him/her a Power User.

Can the admin be a power user?
Also, it's actually folders that I want to be private, so that its contents aren't messed with.
Thanks for all the responses. I'm sure I'm close to figuring it out..

I don't get it. Is this WinXP Home? If it is, you don't have folder/file-level security. Only WinXP Pro does.

Are you sure you're logged on as Administrator? Go to Users and Groups and create a new User with Admin privileges. If you can't, you're not Admin.
Try using folder > properties > security.

I hate that new n00b ****. I liked Win2K much better because it made you get your hands dirty.
Anyway, congrats!

Win xp home does have private folders, but they must be in the c:\documents and settings\username folder. you can make "my documents" or any other folder in your profile "private".
for xp pro, i wouldn't bother with "private" folders. just use the encryption option, in the advanced properties. Same thing for win2k. :D
