How can I verify that my motherboard is in fact a M590. I can't find any details from the board itself. Is there a programme that I can run that will tell me. I know that it currently has a AMI Bios v1.19 that I would like to upgrade. But before I carryout the upgrade I would just like to verify I'm using the right data.

The BIOS String across the bottom during the memory count will tell you the manufacturer of the board.

Visit:
http://www.phoenix.com/pcuser/phoenixbios/motherboard.html

to explain how to tell the boards manufacturer. From this you can go to their site.

Sites like:

are quite good.

I always found with the old M series (PCChips, etc.) boards that I wouldn't finally choose a BIOS flash w/o confirming exactly what type of mobo it was so look for either diagrams and/or specs (number of pci/isa slots, connectors, locations of the various slots, cpu socket, etc)

don't guess - be careful that you use the right BIOS flash - some of the manufacturer sites might give you the wrong update so get what you think is the right update from two of the sites and make sure they're the same

if you're doing the flash with such an old board just to install a bigger hard drive there's ez-bios and maxblast that will let you use a new big drive without the BIOS change - if you're new to the process that's an option too

do a search, I think, for "PCChips lottery" - seems to me that was a site listed all those types of boards, etc.

On power up I get
(C) AMI
51-0814-001437-00101111-071595-570-001_10_CHIPSET_H

What does this mean? It looks nothing like the Phoenixbios website example.

Dave.
The PCChips site list two different BIOS versions. How can I tell which one I need.

try to look for the PCB code 1.3 or 3.0 sort of around the keyboard or ps2 connectors

of anywhere else hopefully it will look like this ( ver 3.0 )

code translation ???? jul 15 , 1995 ver 1.1 h

what does the bios say as far as date ??

i had a 1.3c and 3.0g i think i'm remembering correctly :)

i wouldn't bet a 100 bucks on it though :)
