I'm currently looking for a new phone modem (no cable here http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif ). There are plenty of 56K modems out there, but I want one with a special hardware feature that manufacturers don't care to list in their specs.

Back in the days of 28.8, I had a Supra modem which had a relay that isolated the LINE plug from the rest of the phone system plugged in the PHONE plug.

If you know of a 56K modem (internal or external, soft or hard, I don't care) that has this relay, please tell me.

If your objective is to prevent being cut off if someone picks up a phone, there are "privacy" blockers that go in a phone line. When one phone is in use, the others are dead. I've used one for your purpose.

If you want a really good hardware modem, Zoom makes a PCI unit with the latest compression schemes etc. I have one and it's faster than my old USR ISA model that quit.

Zoom eh ? I'll check this one out...

I have 2 reasons for the relay, one is as you said preventing line cut off. The other, well I'm one of those guys who still plays old games via modem with my friends. The good thing with this is that when we end up playing, the modem doesn't really hang up, but instead put back the relay to the PHONE position so I don't have to call my friend to talk (useful when you start a game at 8 PM and end up 11 PM and you don't want to wake up your friend's family).

The privacy blocker might work that way too. Take pnone off hook and log off ... 'puter releases line, phone holds it ... maybe. The unit I used is at a niece's home 50 miles away and no one is there right now to do a test.
