I just got a brand new hard drive and I noticed that i don't have a bay for it in my computer. Does anybody know if there is an installation kit where I can mount it in a bay that was meant for a cd-rom? I checked several online stores and I couldn't find one. If this doesn't work, are there som eother options?

I know I should have checked this before I got the hard-drive.

Thanks,
Matt

Sure. There are brackets that attach to the sides of the HD making it the same width as a CD-rom type device. Go down to your local computer shop and ask. They should charge you but maybe $5 max. If they are really smart they'll just give 'em to ya in the interest of winning over a customer. Basically they're just metal brackets that many of us and certainly any computer shops are gonna have lying around here and there.

If you don't find brackets, you can just leave it lying on the floor of your case. Or tuck it in the bay where you were planning to mount it. Put a piece of paper under it so there will be no chance of electrical short circuits.

It is a interesting idea by Roy, Does anybody know how the drive could be easily secured?

I have a problem where on one system I am completely out of bays. I was trying to find or figure out a way to mount another "hidden" bay because I have enough room between my existing drives and my case fan.
Short of tearing apart a rack from an old case, does anyone know if such a bracket exists or another easy way to "hang" an extra drive there securely?

Thanks for the response. I used the open bay and put an old mouse pad under it.

Now if I could only get Windows ME to read the correct size of the drive, I'd be really happy. The size is fine in the Bios. It should be 45 gigs but when I start to format it in Windows ME it says it's only 8000 or something megs.

Thanks,
Matt

Hey! It worked. I now have a new 45 gig hard drive installed.

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.

Another idea for securing the drive would be the "superlock" velcro like stuff they sell at radio shack. I know you all know what I'm talkin' about, it's the stuff like velcro on steroids. I have a 10/100 hub stuck on the underside of my hutch on my desk with this stuff and it works good. I have 3 patch cables running to it and it is still rock solid. One word of warning, it will peel laminate wood surfaces up with the tape cause sometimes the tape backing gives up before it separates.
