A friend of mine would like to run an application and its update on her system. She has Quickbooks and her customers have earlier and later versions than what she has, and want their files output to their version. My first response was that the latest version of Quickbooks would probably save out to older formats - but then, it might not. I told her that trying to install more than one version would probably cause problems with the Registry. Any way to work this out?

Versions of Quickbooks are not backwards or forward compatible. My daughter, who is a CPA, has had to install onto her own computer all versions of Quickbooks that clients use. In fact, update level of a version from Intuit site must also match. All can be installed into the same partition without problems. It's Intuit's way of squeezing every last dollar out of its user base.

Many programs will look for older versions and uninstall or overwrite them (Norton AV for example). You'll probably have to check with the vendor on each individual program. Quicken and Quickbooks are a special case. I reckon that TurboTax is the same way. :D
