"alicia" - professional entertainment (http://solidgold.hypermart.net)
My HP scanjet 4400c began to freeze as soon as it reached the "Warming up the lamp" stage a few days ago, so I uninstalled then reinstalled the scanner. The problem was still there, so since it was still under warranty, I had it replaced. When I installed the new one, I STILL had the same problem.
I called Hewlett-Packard, and when we tried to get System Info, we learned that I had some missing Windows 98 files. I replaced them (msnsspc.dll, msapsspc.dll, MSINFO32.exe, MSVCRT.dll) with my Windows 980SE disk, could then access System Info, but this did not repair the problem with the scanner!
I am totally lost at this point as is Hewlett-Packard! Does anyone have a clue what happened and/or what I can do to fix this? I am really feeling DUH-mb at this point!
THANKS!

I would uninstall and reinstall the scanner software. Next, reinstall Windows over itself, Alicia. No data will be lost.

Thanks Bill. I failed to mention that I had uninstalled and reinstalled several times as well as installing Windows "on top of itself" already. Didn't change anything at all.
I'll tell ya, I am really in a quandary over this mess. In fact, HP has no answers either. They had me download 2 updates...one was 1.23 Mb and the other [B][I][U] 63.35 Mb !!!! I 'm not sure what those updates did, but they didn't resolve the problem. So I am back to square one again. I am sure I will have nightmares over this one! haha~~

Obviously, there's a system-level problem with Windows itself, Alicia. I would recommend wiping the drive and starting over.
Before you do, is this a USB scanner? If so, open System Information (MSINFO32.EXE) and navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click anywhere in the right pane and then press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. You have copied that data to the clipboard. Paste that data in a reply here.

It does look good at first glance. Do other USB devices work?
Sometimes, all it takes is to remove the USB Root Hub and Host controller in that order in Safe Mode. To get in to Safe Mode, you restart and press F8 repeatedly until you get a boot menu. Choose Safe Mode and open Device Manager (System in Control Panel). Go to the Universal Serial Bus section and remove the above.
While there, remove all duplicate devices in all sections.
Restart normally and try again.

No USB hub is listed.
BipolarBill
06-02-2002, 08:48 AM
That's ok - only the USB host controller is assigned an IRQ.

See...I told ya I don't have a clue! Here's something interesting, though... I found that I could use the "Copy" feature of the scanner with the buttons on the front of it. Didn't try accessing it through the actual program, though. The lamp warmed up, scanned and copied directly to the printer. But it still won't do a normal scan from Start New Scan in the menu! Ain't this weird??
Now, back to your observation....no USB Hub. What do I do???

Hey Bipolar - isn't there a control panel switch associating scan controls to windows events.
BipolarBill

The hardware is not a problem, Alicia. The software is the problem. Actually, to be specific, the TWAIN driver is the problem.
Uninstall and reinstall the scanner software and the scanner. I would first:
1. open Device Manager in the System applet in Control Panel, locate the scanner and remove it.
2. Now unplug the scanner.
3. In Add/Remove Programs (control Panel), remove the scanner software.
4. Restart and follow the HP installation instructions carefully.

HP is very inconsistent in how it installs scanners. Sometimes it's in Device Manager and Control Panel and sometimes just one or the other. If Alicia has a scanner test applet, it may fail because of a corrupted TWAIN driver.

Bangin on.
L had endless probs with a storm/logitech pagescan usb with
98/98se/me etc. It was a useful bit of kit when working.
Blah blah cut a long story short - it would never start up when booting similar to this prob.
One day in CP > Camera's and scanner's> *** scanner l stumbled
into a switch associating the scanner with system/program events, assuming that Stimon was loading at boot.

Well, I unstalled AGAIN as per your instructions. I've done this a total of over 6-8 times now. But I will do it again. The really frustrating part is that the #$% installation disk takes forever to start, acts like it's frozen, and finally, after about 15 minutes it begins to install. What a pain. Oh well, if it works, it's worth it.
Thanks for the help, and I will get on this as soon as my Limewire music finishes downloading and let ya know what happens. Keep your fingers crossed....and your toes, and your eyes...whatever works!!

assuming that Stimon was loading at boot. Stimon = Still Image Monitor.
Alicia:
Create a new folder on your hard drive somewhere. Explore the installation CD and press CTRL-A. Copy and Paste them all into the New Folder. From henceforth, install the software from the hard drive.
Honestly, I'm beginning to think that Windows is corrupted and may need to be reinstalled.

Well, once again I followed your directions to the letter, uninstalled and reinstalled the scanner, but there is still no resolution. HP says it's a Windows thing, Microsoft says it's a computer manufacturer thing, and are you ready for this....
A local computer business built my machine, sold me an extended warranty, then promptly sold out/went out of business. The new company says they didn't buy their "business", just their stock.
SoI paid them over $300 last March to reformat my hard drive and install Windows 98-SE with their assurance they would save my data before doing so....I have two rather large hard drives, have my "life" on this thing, and got my computer back with only Windows. They simply said, "Oops....forgot to take the disk out before putting everything back on, and lost it. Sorry."
I had my business files (ALL OF THEM!!!), on there as well as my bank account, family records, and the usual ton of personal files and programs I used daily...all gone. Oh yes...they also installed a new CD-ROM drive and "forgot" to connect it to my sound card!
So, you see, I am all alone on this island!

i had the exact same problem with my hp 4400c. on a celeron 900. at the time, i had a 256MB ram stick, and whenever i started the scanner, i'd warm the lamp, and sometimes it'd scan a picture. but it would always freeze. i also had problems with memory-intensive apps like photoshop/quark. so it turns out, i swapped out the ram, and put new stuff in, and it works smooth as silk now. so, see if you can borrow someones ram, then try to scan.. if it works, just pick up some new ram.. hope this helps.. :)

Okay...let's see if I can reply to everyone...
First BipolarBill: Smirnoff Ice IS carbonated, and has the same "kick" as say a Coors light! Well, for me anyway, 'cause as seldom as I drink, I would be a "cheap date"...2 drinks of "whatever" and I'm under the table!
And no, I haven't recently added memory. I have a rinky-dink Pentium II with 2 hard drives...
C: 5.99 Gb, 96 mb RAM
D: 16.7 Gb, 24 mg RAM
Since I just got the thing reformatted a short time ago, I haven't really even loaded very much back on it yet, so it's got a lot less than it did before when the scanner worked fine.
AND....regarding memory never going bad, it depends on how old ya are. Personally, I don't remember the question...LOL!
Now Intertwine....I think I kinda covered what you mentioned in the reply to BipolarBill. If you can think of something I overlooked, let me know and I'll check into it. I'm grasping at straws at this point.
And Finally, Mr. Speedo....you're gonna make somebody a great husband if ya haven't already. But I'll tell ya what....next time I need any of those chores done and can scrape together another $300, you're "da man"!!! (I hope "Speedo" IS a man's name, or I'm gonna be REALLY embarrassed...apologies in advance if it isn't.)
Did I miss anyone? Hope not! Gosh, you all are so neat, AND so much fun. I'm ALMOST glad I had this problem just to get to meet you! I don't know where any of you are from, but I'm from the "South"...that's with a capital "S"....LOL! Kiddin'!....Alabama, to be precise. Are there any others here with a Southern "drawl"?

AH-SUM, Bill.... Hey, I have a pal...well, actually, he is my daughter's pal, but he is also from NY...or maybe it's NJ...anyway, we both have tons of fun trying to alter each other's pronunciations. He's famous for his "ah-sum", and we're trying to get him to say "dang!". We already got him to call in a "to-go" order one morning for a "grit"...told him they were huge, and only to order ONE! (For those who don't know, grits look somewhat like cream of wheat when cooked.) Anyway, Michael, affectionately known as "Yankee", called in the order, insisted on getting only ONE grit, and we all had a good laugh, including him. He is a great sport, but we know he's gonna get us back in spades, so we're ready....I hope! I'm gonna really miss him when he moves back home. He is only here for another year. He and my daughter work together as paramedics, and he is like part of our family...in fact, he calls my husband and myself "Dad and Mom". He's a sweety!

HP ScanJets and DeskJets installation can be pretty messed up!
Even uninstalling the software from the Uninstall Link, something will still remain in your hard drive.
Go to HP site. They have a tool for COMPLETE REMOVAL of their devices (including registry!).
It's a bit complicated, but it's the WAY! :D
And here (http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=dj1032&i=dj1032mu&p=hpdeskjet928738&n=hp+deskjet+980cxi+printer) is the removal tool I tould you!
This is generically for printers, but it saved my a** when I was having problems with my ScanJet 4470c (via USB!of course!)

Thanks!!!! However, the scanner is working! Don't know what I did, but I just kept "doing stuff", and it finally worked. Installed and uninstalled the scanner AND Windows 'til I was blue in the face! Now, I have a new problem.... you're not gonna believe
THIS....
I kept having to replace system files (once I got the file checker to open!). Of course, this sent up all kinds of red flags, so I downloaded the latest virus definitions, installed them, and ran a complete virus check....nothing!!
Then I ran ScanDisk and Defragger. There is still at least 1 missing file.....WINASPI.dll. Can't get it restored even with the Windows disk. Sure sounds like a virus, doesn't it? BUT....the biggie now is that I can't get online to even troubleshoot....am using my daughter's laptop now. Here is what happened....
When I try to sign on to AOL, I get an error message that the port is either in use by another device or corrupted. Well....I have done all the troubleshooting through every resource I can find, but everything points to the fact that it should be working. BUT...here's the catch....when I look in my device manager and check modems, it's there and listed correctly and says it is installed on COM3. AOL dial-up adapter says the same, as does AOL setup. In fact, everything shows it's on COM3 except Ports (under Device Manager).....COM 1 and 2 and the printer port are there, but that's all.....no COM3!! Can't get HyperTerminal to connect, and when I go to Control Panel/Modems/Diagnostics tab, highlight COM3 (my modem is listed correctly there), and click More Info, I get a little window saying "Couldn't open port". What the heck is going on?
Well, I am ready to throw my hands up! Called the computer store (the bad guys), and they say my modem has gone bad...but it's awfully strange that it was fine one minute, nothing out of the ordinary (lightning, etc.) happened, then poof...gone!
There just HAS to be a common denominator to all this, but unfortunately I am not computer-smart to find what that is. Any ideas, Kazuza, BipolarBill, or anyone??

First thanks to all of you for taking an interest in my problem! Kazuza, I had already spoken to Bill when you called and he had pinpointed the problem, but thanks so much for offering to help! I don't want you to think I was ignoring you.
In the process of trying back up my files "just in casse", I realized just how unstable my system is, so I decided to reformat. Remember that illustrious computer store/repair shop I spoke so "highly" of earlier? Well, they told me that Norton products would ruin my computer and installed another brand when they "fixed" my computer. I paid to update it, and learned it had merged with another company that was supposed to make it even. It alerts you immediately when a new virus/fix is discovered, so I updated sometimes as often as daily.
Well, all this junk sounded like a virus, so I updated again and scanned a couple of times only to get a clean report. Finally, out of frustration, I took the program off (boy, was THAT a chore....they make it almost impossible!), then I put good old Norty back on and scanned....couldn't update 'cause I can't get online, but guess what! It immediately picked up Plutto.602 which is a virus that's been around since July of 1972!! Went to the website of the "bootlegs" and found that they don't even have it listed in their virius encyclopedia!
So.....this virus screws around with ('scuse the term) command files...bet that's the basis of ALL my problems, not that it counts for much at this point! Wanna know the name of this so-called anti-virus software? (Did I say ANTI-virus??) It's eTrust EZ Trust through Computer ASSociates....they bought out PC-Cillin in May of this year, I believe it was.....do NOT use their products!
So now you know the rest of the story.....

I suppose that viruses older than the CEOs of many tech companies could pose a problem. Don't let anyone tell you that Norton messes with a system. Peter Norton is a god in this industry and Symantec is as good or better than any other utility company when push comes to shove. CA (Computer Associates) I'm very familiar with. My cousin worked there for years. The only thing they're good at is buying other companies cheap.

2- Can't get display to change at all. Need it to be 600 x 800, but "slider" won't respond.

Well, after days of gnashing of teeth, "cussing", losing sleep, and sinking deeper and deeper into depression, running up a long-distance phone bill talking to Bill, reformatting my hard drive THREE TIMES, I am PLEASED (understatement of the year!) to announce that I once again have a functional computer!
