Fellow Blues Lovers:
I tried defragging 13 GB WD 5400rpm Caviar HD (Win98se) today as I do every Saturday. I shut off screensaver, power down modes, etc. HD stopped defragging about 10 percent through. Ran thorough scan per Help Instructions. Re-attempt at defrag - Same thing. Any ideas?
Thx!

Try booting into safe-mode.

I have to agree 100% with NDC. When I've had or seen the same problem, it's worked every time!
I have seen things that have forced me to go to "Safe Mode" scan disk in standard, scan disk in thorough, defrag, reboot into windows and repeat. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
(No, it wasn't my machine!! it was a friend of mines and he'd NEVER scan disked or defragged and was having all sorts of problems, so he asked me to fix. Ended up spending about 12 hours working on his machine, but it ran better then when he first bought it! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif )

Sometimes I am unable to complete a scandisk or defrag even in safe-mode. I found another defragger, Diskeeper. It takes about 5-10 minutes to defrag on a system that isn't too fragged. You can download the demo from http://www.execsoft.com

Being sick of Win98 stupid time consuming defrag, I have discovered that by replacing the file, defrag.exe in the windows directory with defrag.exe from WinMe or the old Win95b/c (never "A"), it works well and is three times as fast.
Defrag once a week? What are you doing that requires you to defrag so often?

Ptrper, the TIF (temp internet files) folder becomes fragmented very quickly while surfing, especially if it's sitting @ its size limit so files are constantly being added & deleted. For the bandwidth challenged like myself, defragging the partition where the TIF folder resides is a daily thing to speed up surfing -- takes 'bout 20 seconds.
