Bought a new Abit motherboard that has an amr slot on it and wanted to check out what its all about...anybody have any pointers on what AMR modem is the best. Thanks Kron

None! Unless you're really REALLY hurtin' for money and have no choice but to buy the cheapest modem, then I'd advise you just ignore the AMR slot.

An AMR modem will have a much bigger performance impact (negative) on your processor than will a standard modem. They're even worse than Winmodems.

The AMR slot is of no use to anyone except for OEM PC builders that want to save money by using inexpensive half-hearted devices made for the AMR slot. I say half-hearted because AMR devices are designed with key component missing to save cost. The device then requires your CPU to emulate it's missing components during operation. Obviously, that eats up your CPU resources.

If all you do with your on-line connection is maybe read/send email then an AMR modem might be just fine. Anything more demanding than that and I would touch an AMR modem with the proverbial ten-foot-pole.
