Whats the deal with resolution? Everyone seems to love higher and higher resoltions.

I can't play a game in more than 800x600 because the icons become to small to read. When set on 1600x1200 I don't believe anyone could ever read anything in a game. With windows you can resize the icons and text size but games do not give this option.

I have a 19 inch monitor (18 viewable) and my eyes are going slightly but are not that bad. Like I said, any resolution over 800x600 makes text unreadable to me in a game. Is my monitor just way to small or are my eyes a lot worse than I think?

I play all games at 1024x768, It is the way I like it but any higher doesn't work out.

I can't play RollerCoaster Tycoon in 800x600 mode, even though I have my resolution set at 800x600, because the icons become too small.

And, I agree with you. Higher and higher resolutions aren't that great. I have used computer with 1024x768 and I rather use the 800x600 mode.

window$ is set to 1280x1024 32bit but i play games at 1024x768.

I'm at 1280x1024 32bit too on a 19inch flat screen Lacie and an R8500..

I used to feel the same way I was an 800x600 boy but eventually moved up to 1024x768 and now this. There are several reasons for that..

1- higher quality components makes it much easier to read.. the flat screen and the high quality Radeon 2d/3d are heaven sent.. it was a b*tch on my old copaq 15inch and an old Voodoo.. every thing was 2 small and slightly fuzzy with low refresh rates.. ugh

2- if you use your 2d environment for graphics or designing or even office programs.. you have so much more desktop to work with. after using it I really have a hard time going back. I can see all of my work now instead of scrolling for forever. much better.

the cheaper the nice large monitors and vid cards get the higher the resolutions will go..

Man. the deal with resolution is. You use the resolution u feel better with.

I like 1280x1024 for windows and 1024x768 for games.
U can like that or 800x600 or 1600x1200 or 1400x1050.......................

only you knows what is better for your eyes.

If you cant read game text? Soo put a lower resolution.
But if u dont give a **** for games that have a lot a of text like me.
Put max resolution and get perfect lines, perfect details.
u need just a good video card.

If I'm playing a networked fps against someone with a lower resolution setting I can see them before they can see me. When I'm still a pixelly blob that may or may not be dangerous, you've got arms and legs and I've just targetted your chest.

For editing photos, as mentioned earlier, I can see a lot more and have to scroll a lot less.

I go for the high resolutions in FPS and other games because I LOVE the perfect lines. Too bad my EXTREMELY annoying gfx card will only hit 1024X768.

Depends on what size screen is being used. A 17" is probably a practical minimum for 1024x768, 800x600 on a 15". With recent cards able to deliver much more performance than 1024x768@60fps you might as well enable anti-aliasing to smooth out the edges of polygons. 640x480+AA can easily look as good as 800x600 or even 1024x768.
