hi all. I am fairly new to the computer game and i need a little advice. i inherited what was left over from son in laws computer upgrade. an old 486 box with an asus P5A-8 mobo, an amdK6-2 400 proccesor. it has a sound card, older sound blaster I beleive. so far I have got the floppy to work, two hard drives both just under 550mb, i mention this because apparently on of the hdd is suposed to be a gig or just over. I ran the serial # and stuff through maxtor(the manufacturer) and it says its a 2 gig drive, yet in set up or bios its saying they (it) are only 500 and change hard drives. now it is probably important to mention that since i dont have a spare cd rom, I had to load win 95 from the first set of floppies put out(win95a I beleive) any way after much greif trying to load win95 a kind forum member from jeeves sent me a patch that is nessesary to slow things down or something because this speed of proccesor wasent herd of back then. sorry I do tend to digress. so as for the hard drive issue I am wondering if maybe the operating system has something to do with it. anyway, moving along. i have after some greif and sorrow got every thing to work so far except the modem. I am using a modem plus pci56k data, fax. voice modem. the box says its an ess 2818 pci modem. I have installed the modem and it says its their in modem properties but the computer cant comunicate with it. make sure its turned on, hooked up, bla bla. in sys properties/ modem/ it says the modem is their+paralel cable on lpt 1 and serial cable on com 1 and serial cable on com 2.
i do have the serial conection for transfering drivers and such from my main computer to the one I am trying to put together.
would those settings effect the modem! in tthe other device folder I have a yellow ? mark in front of pci bridge and a ? and a ! mark in front of pci comunication device. well I pretty much know about the comunications thing but the pci bridge thing is beyond my knowledge. if anyone could sugest what i am not doing or should be doing it would be apreciated. sorry for the length, but i noticed lots of detail helps in narowing the problem down. thanks all, ward

Please use upper/lower case, punctuation and paragraphs, wardD. It's very difficult to read "stream of consciousness" posts. I'm dizzy.

The hard drive issue is caused by a PC BIOS which cannot recognize more than 500MB drives. Download MaxBlast from Maxtor and use it to set up the drives. You will likely end up with a few partitions.

The modem you're using is a WinModem and has minimum system requirements. They should be listed on the box. It installs in two parts (drivers).

If this is an Intel setup, download this:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/confirm.asp?dfURL=ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/4241/a08/infinst_enu.exe&URL=/4241/a08/infinst_enu.exe

and run it. That will straighten out the motherboard PCI problem and may let the modem install properly.

I also had a problem trying to install a software modem on an old Windows 95(A) machine. As you describe, the modem was recognized and installed, once I supplied the drivers, but couldn't communicate. You could try upgrading the O/S to at least Windows 95B (not sure if this will work) or Windows 98 (this is more likely to work) or try getting a hardware modem rather than a software one.

BTW, Bill, what exactly does that Intel prog that you linked to do?

Those are just the Intel chipset drivers. I find that if the chipset drivers are installed just so, part 2 of the Winmodem drivers won't "take". There's usuallly a "PCI bridge" or something hanging out all yellow and stuff from Device Manager in the System section too.

well guy,s I do apologize for my shoddy punctuation and the inability to keep a steady train of thought. I have two other computers in the house which we tend to warp out regularly.
I have got to the point I can get them up and running when things go bad, so I have been using what I would do on this machine as a model for the one I am trying to get going.
a word of thanks to all that have replyed. i have downloaded the sugested links. except one and I will go look at it once I am done here. I have ran into another small set back . for some odd reason when i try a direct cable conection to transfer the files to the guest computer(the one I am playing around with) it cant find "my" computer. the hook up go,s fine, says we are conected and the the guest computer is looking for shared files. it asks for the host computer name and when i punch it in it says it cant find the computer.
Now here is where I loose the stream of conciosness(sorry). I have transfered all the drivers and patches using this computer and a direct cable connection. I plug it in and hook up keyboard, mouse, monitor and the parallel cable like i normaly would but it doesent work. i do have a lan hooked up to the wifes computer, I am not sure if it was set up when i first started dicking with this other machine. would that have any bearing on why the two machines wont connect via a parallel connection. i noticed today when I went to go on line my pass word was not remembered. it normaly is. this would sugest for some reason or another some setting have changed. if i change the host and guest settins on the two computers, making the older one the host, it hooks up for a second then disconects. besides file sharing do i need any special protocal or adapter! any thoughts would be big! I will sign off now and go dick around with my project. thanks again guys i apreciate your banter. ward!

Have you installed and enabled DCC (direct cable connection) on the host?

Look in Device Manager under System Devices. If you see Intel, that's what you have.

OK...you have an ALi chipset:

ftp://ftp.aliusa.com/driver/Integrated1.07.exe

Those are your chipset drivers. My Bad.

hi again. well collor me stupid. I have tryed to get to your last link but the page canot be read. i tried changing the ftp// to www. with no luck.
I have been cruising some driver sites looking for ali drivers with no luck their either.
I did find a handy file on the asus p5a motherboard which is clearing up some issues I was wondering about. anyway, if you were looking for the integrated 1.07.exe driver file, what would you look under. its not a modem or vid card, and i dont see an option for chipset drivers. I was looking around in the asus site and tried to serch for the driver their and it come out negative also.
thanks for your patients, but could you steer me a little closer.

ward.

I'm sick of these Taiwanese junk makers with their retarded webmasters. WTF are they thinking? That site won't give anything up. Go here:

http://support.iwill.net/index_e.html

and get the ALi patch and AGP set.

Thanks Bill. In my case it was a Via chipset board. The PCI part of the install was O.K. as well (no problems or conflicts). I think there's just a problem with Windows 95A and winmodems.
