Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Some computer must be detected using find computer with ip not computer name, why?
I have a network running but to find one of my computers i have to use the computer find in win2k and type in the ip address instead of the name of the computer. Everybody else could be seen on computers near you icon. All of the IP choosed are very close in numbering and i was curious why one of my computer is so stubborn. Is that the way it is or is there a setting? I have no problem accessing that computer but I just wanted everything to be consistant.
thanks in advance!

Does it have the same Workgroup name, subnet mask and is the user logging on with Client for MS Networking?
The subnet mask is different. The computer for some reason wouldn't let me use the same one. Maybe if i can pick numbers which they are all the same it'll reconize it?

1. Are you using a router?
2. What are the two IP addresses and subnet masks?

Are you using a DHCP server or a router with NAT? What are the IPs and SMs for the two computers? I'm not sure what you mean by "very close".
Generally, the two systems would need to have the same network id and subnet mask. the host id would be the only difference. for example:
station1
ip=192.168.1.20
sm=255.255.255.0
station2
ip=192.168.1.21
sm=255.255.255.0
station1
ip=150.125.1.90
sm=255.255.255.0
station2
ip=150.125.1.91
sm=255.255.0.0
One of the other computer for example station 2 wouldn't let me set the submask to 225.225.225.0.
I'm using win2k so i guess dhcp? Dont' really know what it stands for but dont' have a router. Using a 8 port hub. What's a router with NAT? Please educate me? Thanks.

A cable router:
http://www.linksys.com/products/image180/befsr41.jpg
It uses NAT (Network address translation - turns one IP incoming into 253 IPs and shares internet access) and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - allows the router to assign IP addresses and subnet masks "on the fly"). The first also hides your PCs from prying eyes.
It's what most of us use. Most of us would require you to pry them from our stiff, dead fingers if you were to take them away.
How many PC's have you got. 8 or less? You should use a Class C private network no. as shown by Midknyte.
IP address 192.168.1.1 SM 255.255.255.0 and just increase by one for each additional pc.
You are using two different sub networks, which is why you are having difficulty.
Are you logged in as Admin when you tried to change the ip and SM?

Actually they are in the same effective network with those particular IP addresses and subnets.
It would be easier to use the same subnet mask to aviod confusion though.
gtr problem sounds more like an issure with the Computer Browser services. Usually those will clear up within a few days (but not always) and few restarts with the problem PC (just leave the others on during restarting to speed up the process).
Potentially invalid/reservered characters in the computer name may cause this problem.
Thanks everyone! I'll probabaly leave it alone because it's only one computer and i can till contact it by typing the ip address.
Anyways, If i get a router would that be safer to online browseing so people can plant bug to access documents from clients? If it's a great investment which would be good to purchase. So far we have like 5-6 computers hooked up.

Generally it will not stop problems from other methods like virus in email messages or downloaded in web pages. Many trojans can be installed via email attachments or the web pages and then they will contact the "master" and your broadband firewall won't do anything to stop it. That's where something like Zone Alarm can help.

A router is an excellent idea and investment, but it can't protect a user from himself. If a user downloads bad things or lets bad things be sent to him, he will have bad things happen to him.
A router will prevent someone from hacking into the system and it will prevent a user from setting up a server on you LAN.
IMO opinion, no small office or home should be without one.
