Hi! :t

Have just caused havoc with a laptop which I was trying to alter from Win2000 to Win98SE.........following process as described in several Internet based helpfiles.............didn't work...........HELP!!

Fujitsu PIII 700, Win2000Pro, 64Mb, 2GbHDD.
No files or progs installed on HDD were required, I wanted a clean Win98 OS machine..............

Current Status

Boot from HDD gives "no operating system" and lockup
Boot from Win98SE CD gives A: prompt
Able to access CD in D:
Command "sys c:" gives unknown command (from any prompt location I can access)
"fdisk" works to point after choosing Primary Disk Partition, then displays "Current fixed disk drive :1" and freezes, requiring battery out reboot.
Windows 98 setup runs but eventually reports that the HDD has an unknown format and exits............ :(

I don't have Win2000 CD, as it was an "installed only and hologram sticker on case" deal.
I have a Win 98SE CD released from old desktop now on XP...........any help gratefully rec'd!!!!!!!!!!

Find out what kind of HD is in the machine, WD, Maxtor, IBM, etc.

Then goto the manufactors website and download the utility disk.

Make the disk and wipe it out.

The floppy that you're using must be a full Win98 startup disk or have SYS.COM on it You're probably using a bare boot floppy.

Download this disk:

http://www.mirrors.org/archived_software/www.bootdisk.com/winfiles/boot98.exe

Download Zap:

http://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/hddtech/zap.exe

README (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/zap.txt)

Zap the disk first:

ZAP 0 (zero)

Now FDISK it and start installing. ;)
