I am looking for a basic web host. Any suggestions? Also, I just registered a domain name. It would be cool to know how all this works, since the company I registered the name with didn't really say. Is there a site that simply explains how the Internet functions, how domains work, etc? I don't want to sound ignorant. It's just that I have been building web pages not understanding how it all works.
Thanks!

Sorry I can only provide another webhost... cheap and very dependable. It's too bad you've already registered a domain though.. this host would pay your registration fee for the domain as well as the yearly renewals for as long as you're a customer.
I believe they were in the top 5 of that list...

Check them out anyway at http://www.readyhosting.com

Well Warthog,

I guess you'll have to stop your constant terrorism on these forums, now that your dad is here to open a can of you know what if you mis-behave. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Have you used readyhosting? Or did you just like the way they explained there service? I was checking them out, and they sound very good...but I don't know...I still am kinda if-y on whether or not they are respectable or not. Any info would be great..

Packlite,

I might be able to answer a few of your questions, though I don't know how much you know. Do you want to know how a specific web hosting service works, or generally how to publish a web page?

tw1112, yes, I'm currently developing a site for someone using their hosting services. They are tremendous when it comes to email response as well as the services they provide. Little extras like a shopping cart utility, LiveStats logging (check www.mediahouse.com (http://www.mediahouse.com) --> LiveStats demo and you'll see what I mean!), and tons of API support.

I'm using ColdFusion/Flash for the site I'm doing ( http://www.divetristar.com ) and readyhosting was the only one among the top listed webhosts to support CF. And it's **** cheap for unlimited data transfers, FTP transfers, email, etc... I can't say enough good things about it.

yep....I'm iffy on the speed of readyhost's system. Couldn't find any info on their actual facilities.

They haven't been around that long either.

I used to build sites a few years ago and always recommended ValueWeb to my clients: http://www.valueweb.com
Very good service and their package prices were reasonable.

I use www.amhosting.com (http://www.amhosting.com) for www.store31.com (http://www.store31.com) and www.paulandemily.com. (http://www.paulandemily.com.) They are awesome. Their tech support answers in less than 24 hours per email. not some generic reply either. a real person types em up. I also use www.prowebsites.com (http://www.prowebsites.com) for my vetsoftware.com host. they are okay. nice configurations..but not my favorite.
