what i want to know is, do i absolutely need an ATX case, or will my old AT suffice? i'm just trying to build a puter so that i have SOMETHING when i move out, and i'm on an extremely limited budget. and 50$ for just the case is a bit more than i would like. so, what are your opinions?

If you look carefully, you may find At/Atx cases for around $35.00-50.00. They have either with an At or ATX connectors. In some cases, they come with an ATX kit. Hope it helps!
Computer "shows" are a good place to shop for cases. You can touch and compare, and the prices usually start at $30 for a decent ATX case. Or look around at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)
In addition to a different PS connector, ATX boards use a momentary On-Off button. Sometimes the alternate-action AT switch can be modified by removing a locking pin
The ultimate rub is the 3.3V requirement of SDRAM coupled with the cutout for the ATX connector panel.
I've seen people modify AT cases for the purpose, but they paid almost as much for a PS as the complete case would have cost.
