One of the computers in my network has a very weird problem.
It'a a Windows 2000 SP2 SRP1 Professional, and although until Thursday it received a normal IP adress through the DHCP Server (range between 10.0.0.0 to 10.0.0.200 on a 255.255.255.0 subnetmask), since Monday that the computer was switched on the ip address remains 165.172.9.154 sm 255.255.0.0 . I tried entering a static address with no results. Any ideas on how to return it to the network range of its original domain?

First check network connectivity. See if the hub light is on for that node.
Make sure that there's no other PC on the subnet with that one's old IP. Ping that IP and see if you get a response. If you do, another PC has been assigned the IP - probably because your DHCP range(scope) is too narrow. Widen it by two nodes if you can so that this one can get an IP.
The third test would be to simply release/renew the IP on this unit. Open a command prompt and type:
IPCONFIG /RELEASE
IPCONFIG /RENEW
See what that gets you.

BTW...fixed IPs are the way to go for network stability.

Well , I had already tried everything you said bill . I have about 45 free IP addresses in that range. Fixed IP's is not an option when you have a network of about 200 PC's and growing. I have enebled the option to see the network connection in the taskbar and it shows connection of 100 Mbps incoming packets none, out going a few. It shows connection but it's getting a totally wrong ip. I have had this problem on another computer on Friday but it was fixed by renewing its address . This one is stubborn.HHHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!!:(

Have you restarted the PC? You could do what I do - remove the NIC in network properties and restart. That usually clears this nonsense up.

Done that. I even gave it a free static address and it still didn't logon to the domain. it's driving me crazy. Format is not an option either.

I rarely use the F word. I prefer the Z word (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/zap.txt). Has the cabling changed at all? Any collisions to note? Have you tried another NIC?

The DHCP Manager shows an IP address with no computer name attached to it. I think that is the problem.its trying to get an ip address but it never really does. I will try to lock the ip address out of range and see what happens.

Problem Solved. I overlooked the obvious. The utp cable was weak on its green white cord. it was wrongly cut and on Thursday the cleaning lady pulled the socket out and put it inside without care damaging the cable. It showed connection but no connection was really made. Thanks Bill.

Better get some strain relief on those cables!
Congrats, dev3175.
