my dad has an old reel to reel player that he has used to record alot of things, and since the company is out of business and he cant get replacement parts, he wants me to record his reel tapes onto cd using my cd writer.

how would i go about doing this while maintaining quality? (quality is big for him)

i have a sound blaster 16 i think, but it does have line in's and such.

how do i record once it's hooked up to the sound card? should i just use the .wav recorder? or is there a program?

also, i have to change the files to .cda in order for a cd player to recognize the tracks, right? what program should i use to do that??

thanks for the help.

You need special software to do this. There are a couple to try- Data Becker's CD Recorder,Adaptec EZ CD Creator Deluxe's Spin Doctor and MusicMatch Jukebox Deluxe have these tape to CD recording capabilities.Depending on the quality of sound you want or will accept this can be done with the above named programs or,you can take the reel to reel to a studio for better quality sound at a much, much higher cost.

Yes use the line out of the reel-to-reel directly to the line in of the sound card(if you don't already have the right connectors to hookup the reel-to-reel, you can find them at Radio Shack),through a receiver, or through a device like one of these (http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/SoundAndVision/FrameSet/Features/Pcstereo/pcstereo1200p01.html) .

It's best to transfer from the audiotape to the HDD, perhaps one cut at a time. Then you can select what goes to the CDR and mix things up if you like.

Buy him a standalone MiniDisc recorder/player and let him record as much content as he wants. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
