I just read that my new AMD 850 CPU needs thermal paste (?) put between it and the heatsink/fan which I bought.
Does the rubber peel-away strip on the heatsink count as sufficient bonding between cpu and heatsink?
I looked on amd.com but couldnt find any specific info.
Any help is gratefully received.

That pad does not transfer heat too well. Thermal paste would be better, and it does not have to cost much.

The zinc/silicone from Radio Shack works OK.
The Artic Silver transfers heat better but I've heard that it dries out.
I have some Copper Paste that will not dry out and is good for up to 500F or so.
Main thing is to use the thinnest application of thermal compound as possible.
The thicker the paste, the more it acts like a barrier to heat transfer..
Micro thin !!

Artic Silver does NOT dry out. Radio Shack paste does. And A.S. absolutely rocks.

That pink thing is a thermal pad. You can use it but it is not "the best" most people who push there systems over-clocking remove it and use thermal paste. Keep in mind also that it is there for a one time use. Put it on and leave it on. If you remove your HS after initial instalation you would want to remove it using a solvent like nail polish remover and clean that with alcohol before appling paste and reinstalling.

OuT, the shock treatments they did to us at Belvue musta scortched more than a few neurons.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Don't you remember when we were in the lab trying to make some C-4 ?
U-no, when we liquified some copper pennies in the hydrochloric acid then preciptiated it out with some red devil lye.
Then washed it down with the neutralizer and cleaned it with denatured alcohol..
Remember what happened when we dried it then mixed some fuming nitric acid with it,, http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
News headline, "Gas" Explosion at Belvue Inst for the mentally Insane breaks windows for 3 miles http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Aaaahhhh, those were the days,, HUH, WHAT'd YA SAY.. Only thing is my hearing ain't what it was..
No,, I have a "secret" supplier for this stuff. It's gonna hit the market soon..
About the same price as Artic Silver but is supposed to transfer heat better with much longer life.
One problem, a heavy application will cause it to creep. Any that gets on circuits will cause a short..
They're trying to improve the compound to minimize creepage..
If ya like ,, I'll send a "Beta" sample for you to test...
This stuff is slipperer than Owl $hi_ http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
The copper is powered so fine it feels like baby powder in oil.
