Whats with the 1000? 10 is for the transfer of files between computer, 100 is the internet speed, so what is the 1000? I've seen this on the new Linksys Network cards and routers.

You would need to upgrade all network hardware to make use of it. The 1000TX NICs are pretty expensive yet. Up 'till recently, you had to use fiber to get those speeds. http://www.sgi.com/peripherals/networking/gbe_faq.html http://techsolutions.hp.com/dir_gigabit_external/faq.html DVNT1 05-26-2002, 03:01 PM Originally posted by G-man632 ...100 is the internet speed, so what... Not true. The Internet runs a many different speeds in many different places. Some of the fastest backbones run at OC-192 which is 10 Gbps. Much higher than 1000baseT. There are higher rating s than that but I haven't read of them actually being used for Internet traffic. I would guess the highest % of Internet traffic is much slower than even the 100baseT though. for some basics speec info check out the bottom of http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/bandwidth.shtml Ankerson 05-26-2002, 03:16 PM Originally posted by G-man632 Whats with the 1000? 10 is for the transfer of files between computer, 100 is the internet speed, so what is the 1000? Unless you have one heck of a fast system SCSI Raid /w 15,000rpm drives setup in Dual Channel Raid 5 you will never get close to those transfer speeds over a network. But you are talking big big money. The IDE drives, even in Raid 0 will not even come close to those speeds, and more than likely never will. Serial ATA might depending on if it will be Raid compatible. Fiber Channel SCSI is very very fast and will keep up very easy. Dual Channel Raid 5 will keep up with that speed. The reason is that the IDE drives tranfer rates are way too slow. It is more of a sales pitch today than anything else. ;) BipolarBill 05-26-2002, 03:42 PM Just a quick rundown: 10/100/1000 represents networking hardware that is compatible with 10base-T, 100TX and 1000TX. If you use a 10base-T hub, all nodes on the immediate network will be limited to that. On a 10/100/1000 network, you can add endpoint nodes and devices and they will work. If your network is fixed 100TX and you add a 10base-T component, it won't function. It's all about compatibility. Most residential internet connections are limited to 1.5Mbps down and 394KBps up. That's not even close to the capabilites of simple 10base-T. ;) Ankerson 05-26-2002, 04:04 PM BipolarBill, It will be along time before we see any real speed over the internet. 10mbs would be nice though. :D BipolarBill 05-26-2002, 04:16 PM Oh yeah! That would be sweet! How about OC3 to the old Texas homestead? I think that I would need some SCSI RAID advice, eh? A direct hookup to the "old" academia Internet 2 would be an nice perk too. Ankerson 05-26-2002, 04:21 PM I am on a T3 at work and that is very fast. I would settle for that to my door. :D BipolarBill 05-26-2002, 04:32 PM I know a clown who has 2 T3s to his home. I used to work for SWBell and helped hook it up. Man...what a nut! OMG  That's crazy, he must have more money than brain cells. LOL :r Ankerson 05-26-2002, 04:42 PM BipolarBill, I have Roadrunner at home and get 3Mbit /s download speeds. It's fast but nothing like a T3 line. :D BipolarBill 05-26-2002, 04:43 PM Agreed! The place was a hovel in a **** neighborhood too. He was running a business out of it. SWBell loved him. :p I have RR too. I love it. :x Ankerson 05-26-2002, 04:46 PM Originally posted by BipolarBill Agreed! The place was a hovel in a **** neighborhood too.
