well given that it's highly unlikely the laptop has either a scsi or firewire port on it, usb is your best bet. they're not as good as internal ide or scsi drives, but if your friend wants one bad enough, that's what she'll have to go for.

Before USB became the standard for ext cd-rw's, there were parallel port releases by HP and several others. Most were 2x2x6x. That would be the last thing I would do, but USB would be ideal if she has it. Parallel would give loads of buffer underruns b/c of the data t-fer speeds.

I thought I saw one for a PCMCIA port a while back.

The Staples deal,, don't forget to subtract the www.techbargains.com (http://www.techbargains.com) coupon.

I got in on the $250.00 HP USB burner, p/n 8220e , got it at the also always overpriced Amazon.com for $171.00 then comes a $50 rebate..

I'll keep an eye out for ya, meanwhile see if you can determine if it has USB ports..

So yes cd-rw drives do exsit in the PC card(PCMCIA)interface. That one is kind of expensive. I got it out of a Tiger Direct Catalog.

I have a friend that wants a cd-rw for a laptop. I know nothing about laptops. What do I look for? I think that it has a USB port. (trying to describe it to her) What other connections can I look for and which is the best?

staples has a HP USB 4x4x6 for $199. anyone know any other deals?

TIA
