A buddy of mine has an Acer board that has both slots. 4 SIMM & 2 DIMM. He had 2 16 mb SIMM and he just installed a 64 mb DIMM. The DIMM is not being recognized. Does he have to remove the SIMM to be able to use the DIMM ? Or should he be able to use both ?

There may be several issues here. Some boards don't support mixed memory and others do. Another thing to consider is many boards of that generation don't support 64 meg DIMMs at all or may require a BIOS upgrade to do so.
Acer has a good amonut of info on its website though it is rather scattered and difficult to find.
Last time I e-mailed them with a question I got a response next day.

On my 2nd pc, the sims MUST be in the last two slots. My mobo also requires a different jumper setting when mixing.
And as Bdunn mentioned, some mobo's won't support both types.

some of the old dimms are 5 volt and not 3.3 also

most motherboards I've seen say that if you are trying to run DIMMs and SIMMs at the same time the DIMMs have to be 5v, since the motherboard tries to run the SIMMs (5v) and DIMMS (3.3v usually) at the same voltage.
I'd reccomend ditching the 2 16mb SIMMs and replacing them with a DIMM since memory is so cheap now.

Yo NightHawk, are you who I think you are?

Anyway NightHawk(a friend of mine, I think) is right, but there is an added hazard becuase some of the time, using motherboards with two different types of RAM, when the Mobo runs the 3.3v DIMM at 5.0v the DIMM will get very hot and can cause permenant damage to your memory.

In my experience, not a good mix.
