I'm curretnly using windows 2000 on a PIII 866MHZ system . I am considering upgrading my Motherboard to a AMD XP system. I will be keeping all my old componets. It is my understanding that if I change the motherboard, Proccessor and memory and keep my windows 2000 harddrive it should work just fine. Is this true ?
I will be using all the same components sound card, cideo card etc..
Is there anything I should know before I upgrade besides back up my drive?
Thank you for any advise you can offer
Dan

Since your chipset will be significantly different, it may give you trouble. Here's a thread for you to read:

Agreed.

Win2k is a real pain the the **** to get working right to begin with. Best bet would be to back up the data, and do a clean install with the new equipment.

Besides, without the proper port configurations, Win2k may not run your cards/devices properly. The OS usually doesn't do well getting those right through Device Config Wiz.

He doesn't really need to back up. He can just reinstall to the same place. That will preserve his data.

You should read that thread too, InfexusBytez.

Thank you for your feed back.
I have a book here Using Windows 2000 Professional" that says in theory I can remove the harddrive from any computer running windows 2000 and put it into any other computer that meets the requirments and it should automaticaly configure it's self and work.
I knew this was to good to be true.

I usually is good with that - just not every time. Try it. If it fails, use the Repair technique. That will fix most failures.

It's still much better at this than Win98x.
