Have a Gateway 2000 P5-200 with all in one motherboard. I installed a new video and sound card "SoundBlaster Awe 64 ISA". Problem, I get new soundcard to install ok but after removing old on board SB16, it reinstalls SB16 upon reboot and asks for win98 and reloads. I have looked on Gateway site, no info. How do keep old onboard SB16 from reloading after installation of new SB AWE 64 soundcard! Gotta be something simple. Appreciate it!
Have you looked in the BIOS to disable the on-board soundcard? One of my systems is using a Gigabyte GA-7ZXR which has on-board sound and I added a SoundBlaster Live Platinum soundcard and I had to disable the on-board sound through the BIOS to use the PCI interface soundcard..

I am trying to get in Bios now! Gateway reps were terrible, No Help at all on any of this just because it was a Soundblaster card I bought elsewhere. Must pay $2 a minute for tech support. Chat rep, voice rep, and email reps all stated ,TOO Bad, go elsewhere to get any info, All I asked for was how to disable existing Soundcard! Man I am selling this thing and getting someone to build me one so I can get info! Gateway is out as far as customer service goes. Also another note, I took the unit in to a Gateway Repair shop and was told it would cost $300 to repair but a reload of Win 98 corrected all the problems they said was with MB and HD! They are not reputable. I will be glad to give names and dates if someone doent believe me! Thanks for your help and I am off to try out your idea. Back later BUMMED OUT!

Thanks to Popeye who emailed me the fix! All I had to do was go to device manager, select properties on the SB16 and gameport joystick and disable in this hardware profile and uncheck exists in all hardware profiles, reboot, and all is fixed. Items show but are no longer recognized. Such a simple thing, Really upsets me that the Gateway &*%$%# couldnt tell me that! Jennifer needs to get a new line of work! No respect for those folks! Thanks to all that responded, I appreciated it! Have a great Hexidecimal day!
