Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Missing Leo Optics CD/RW Driver
Well i had a major conflict with my computer and the short story of it is that i had to fdisk reformat and reinstall my OS. . .now this wouldnt of all been bad except for the fact that i lost everything. . .including the drivers that were pre-packaged with this thing. . .
eventually i got all of my drivers back except my CD\RW one. . .which absolutely sucks because apparently (after cracking the case open. . .examining the cd\rw itself and not finding any labeling on it to point to a manufacturer) the company is Leoptics or leo optics. . .cant remember the spelling. . .
so im like arite lets go to their site and download it and be done. . .wrong. . .the companys site is down. . .they have no support email working. . .my computers manufacturer. . .everex. . .doesnt have the drivers listed on its download page. . .their tech support was no help. . .and i cant find any drivers for this. . .
is there anywhere i can look i can ask i can go to get these drivers. . .
as far as i know. . .and this is half guessing and half knowledge. . .is its a leoptics 8x4x16 cd/rw
can anyone help me?

There seems to be some confusion about the difference between drivers and burning software. A real-mode driver is required to be able to access any CD/DVD/CD-RW drive -- but only in DOS. This is accomplished with statements in the CONFIG.SYS and in the AUTOEXEC.BAT startup files.
All Windows versions support standard IDE/ATAPI and SCSI drives using protected-mode drivers that are already included in the OS. No special steps or separate user actions are needed to load these drivers.
To burn a CD, application software is required. This is a stand-alone program, not a driver. If you have lost or misplaced this software, you can download programs like Nero or InCD, or buy a software package like Roxio CD Creator.
heres the thing. . .i have nero the registered version and easy cd and all that. . .
it recognizes the cdr as a 2x when in fact its a 8x4x32. . .
and when i try to burn there is an initialization error
see when this was working i upgraded to XP and burned just fine. . .bada bing. . .
but then when i had to wipe the harddrive and start over the drivers didnt work
everex.com has them in their support page. . .but its in an exe and asks for the mscdex.exe which XP doesnt have. .. i had a friend send it to me and it still doesnt install the drivers right. . .
so it doesnt read the cdr correctly. . .so in theory id hafta somehow get back into an win9x. . .load the driver softwere to install and then upgrade back to XP. . .
but there should be a way to avoid all this and just install the drivers

Have you tried the program updates for XP? Rom drives do not require a driver, except as Psycho has already mentioned (in DOS).

ill try the XP updates (if i dont already have them)
if its that simple ill allow u to beat me to death with a pool cue =)

the XP upgrade did not work
it still reads it as a 2x and when i try to burn it fails right away

If you are using Nero it only supports one drive as follows
Leoptics CDD-3620 IDE/ATAPI 2x2x6x - - - 4.0.8.8 2.28
And according to Roxio's site they don't even have your brand of CD Recorder listed...:(

PLEASE !! Go back and re-read my first post slowly. The driver you can download from the Everex site is the DOS DRIVER, which can only be used in DOS with the MSCDEX.EXE program. In order to detect or use the drive under either Windows 98 or ME, that driver is NOT used or required.
im sorry im a little slow with all this stress ive been having. . .
but in that case. . .why doesnt the burner work?
i have 3 different programs. . .all of which do not work because they cannot use the burner correctly
all result in a 'power calibration error'

No burning program works with every burner ever made, especially for older, slower drives. Apparently the burning programs you are trying to use only provide very limited support for some Leoptics models, but not all.
Leoptics may have provided its own or a custom-modified software version that would work with its drives. If such a program was pre-installed on your system by Everex, it's gone now that you have formatted the hard drive. Unless it's on a separate CD that you still have somewhere.
