I have several minor stability issues with Netscape 6 that I didn't have with 4.7 I also can't use Getright for downloads and I am bothered by that also. I am thinking of going back to 4.7 - but what differences are there between 6.0 and 4.7, there must be some but I sure can't find any...
Thk x 2 in advance....

NS6 is one of the most buggy, unfinished, "bubblegum & duct-taped" piece of software I think I've ever seen. It should have never been released as a final product. If you can, get rid of it and go back to 4.7.
Oh and btw, this is coming from a longtime NS user (and IE hater http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif). I use NS 4.75

I agree that Net6 is buggy. It is an example of what you can expect from anything AOL.(As you might guess I'm not a fan) The difference between the two versions are more aesthetic than substantive. I found it quite slow and was especially annoyed by it's attempts to take over my computer, i.e., file atribs, Realplayer, etc. I'll stay with 4.7 until it becomes totally obsolete or I find something better.

Ditto the above. Tried it for a week, then went back to 4.7. If they don't come up with something better real soon, I'm afraid Netscape will be history. It's too bad, I've always preferred Netscape to IE.
Once upon a time, Netscape was the very first browser.
One dark and stormy night, AOL bought Netscape and v6.0 came out.
End of story.

NS6 should never have been released as such. It was -maybe- a first beta (realistically). But Mozilla will still turn around... it just takes time. I have some level of hope for Mozilla .7 (coming out any day now), and by .8 or .9, it will almost certainly be my everyday browser.
The best things in life are never free. They almost always require time.

I found it buggy within a couple of days and got rid of it. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Lucky me kept 4.76 for my back-up to Opera. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif Opera http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif
I did hear a couple of good things about Mozzilla .6, but I'm not in in hurry to try it yet! Those who are interested, here's the link: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/

I am still using NS6 on Linux because it remembers passwords and such - but I find it slower than the previous version and somewhat buggy. At least I have to applaud NS (and AOL for that matter) for releasing a product that not only runs on Linux but even has plug-in updates for Linux.
I love Opera, but I refuse to pay $40 for it!
Hey, what's wrong with IE? I've been very happy with using IE5. As for IE 5.5 that wasn't the case! I've used Netscape on the Linux box, but found nothing really special about it to start using it on my primary system. Is there a reason to start searching for a new browser such as Opera, Netscape, etc? What would be the benefits over IE?

CMONSTER - There is a free version of Opera that has been out for a while now! Yes, the free version has ads, but how many other programs are you using that have ads? Or did you pay to have the ads removed because the program was what you wanted and was the best you could find and just had to get rid of the ads. I bought Opera before it came out with the "Free/ad" version, so I've never seen the ads.
NDC - How about s-p-e-e-d, keyboard shortcuts, smaller size, less freeze-ups and crashes, and lets not forget, more compatible with the new web standards! I never cared for I.E., and I can't really put my finger on why, but I loved Netscape. Then Netscape started crashing all the time and I switched to I.E. only to have it crash on the same sites. I had tried Opera back in its early days and wasn't very impressed, but with Netscape and I.E. crashing all the time, I gave Opera another try. I found they had made a lot of improvements and it worked much better and didn't crash.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention all the viruses and trojans that are geared to only work through M$ programs and specifically target I.E. and Outlook. When I went to 98Lite, I pulled 30MB of I.E. and its components out. But because I wanted to use a couple of M$ components that I did want, I added the I.E. 5.0 core back in, but on top. (In other words, I removed 30MB and added 8MB back in.) That greatly increased the speed of W98SE!

Interesting responses....
The reason I began with Netscape as my first browser, was the fact that my first I.E. experience was to find myself looking at the biggest most disorganized jumble of adds I have ever seen. At least Netscape is subtle. The other thing I have against I.E Explorer is their security is terribly poor for a company that should know better and still can't get it right. Plus every nut case with a grudge goes after them and they act as if they don't have a clue as to what went wrong!
I opened up a hotmail E-mail account due to a wider selection of names and I got spammed to death, now after a couple of months of blocking, only the sneakey get through. I don't know why, but I have never had uninvited mail through Netscape.
So it is true that they screwed up Netscape 6.0, and I agree that they will fix it eventually. But for now ease of use and comfort zone far outweigh my love of Microsoft!
Thanks all....
Thanks for the explanation...... But I get IE crashes once in a blue moon and haven't gotten a virus in any of my systems in over 8 years. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I found it stupid of netscape (and AOL) to use a beta-version of mozilla for it's NS 6, Why couldn't they wait? I've been using several versions of mozilla, and it progresses verry nicely, getting more stable and faster each new version. I can't wait until it reaches its version 1.0.

Let me tell you about buggy....I installed NS6 on my Mandrake 7.2 system and the next time I dropped out of X I couldn't get back in. For some reason it messed with either the fontpaths or the X Font Server(XFS) and xfs was crashing saying it couldn't find ther default font 'fixed'. I was able to repair it by killing the xfs and then specifying all of the font paths in the xf86config-4 file but it was still aggravating as heck.

Mozilla .6 is basically the same as NS 6 without all the extra junk NS added. I didn't even bother downloading. Mozilla .7 is taken from a nightly build (12/26/2000) and was given a few of the most important bug fixes. The first true milestone type Mozilla release won't be until Mozilla .8, which debuts sometime in Feb or March.
I personally find Mozilla .7 to be quite usable, relatively fast, and haven't had it crash yet. My biggest annoyance is with the fact that Moz opens up a new window that is the exactly same size in the exact same location as the original window. So I've been promoting getting this bug fixed. Vote for it if you want. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25455
Oh yeah... tell me how I can get in discussions like that with the actual developers of IE. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
