Problems with Morrowind

My friend is currently running a geforce 4 ti 4400 with an athlon xp 1900+ with 256 mgs of ddr333 on a brand new asus kt333 board as well as a soundblaster audigy. I figured his system would be a beast enought to handle this game but.......he says the game drops out or freezes a lot. Has anyone heard or experienced anything like this with this game? Are there any patches or anything? Any ideas....just leave em please. thanks

I don't know from first hand experience yet, but one thing I have heard about this game is that the copy protection system causes some slowdowns. If you can find a no-CD patch for it that may help somewhat.

I've had some probs with this game similar to your friend. I haven't had it lock-up, but I have seen it drop out (crash) to the desktop. Apparently, this is a fairly known issue (according to MW's forums). I read about it having something to do with Soundblaster cards, and the temporary remedy is to turn down the card's acceleration in dxdiag. Worked for me.

I've been very lucky so far as I've only had two crash to desktops with this game. I'm running a GeForce 3 classic, ASUS A7V133a mobo, AMD Duron 1GH@1.243 and an Audigy Platinum sound card. One crash occurred when I was being attacked by a smuggler and I tried to jump to inventory, down a heal potion, and ready a spell. Blam...ctd! I can't seem to remember the other occurrence. However, I had turned down the music from the very start and maybe, this has helped minimize stability issues. I've also heard that SafeDisc (the copy protection Bethesda uses) seems to cause the game to stutter even when viewing the opening sequence upon booting up the game. However, I haven't tried a no-cd patch to try and fix the problem. Its tolerable in my opinion so long as I am not constantly crashing.
