Get www.antivirus.cai.com (http://www.antivirus.cai.com) InoculateIt PE. hhh8785 01-11-2001, 02:14 PM I like Norton better. I have never had Mcafee but I use it at school. My friend has it and he said that it doesn't detect trojans, or at least it didn't detect the one he had so he had to get a seperate trojan scanner. I have Norton and I think it does trojans but I'm not sure. If I'm wrong let me know http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. BUT.... I've heard Norton can cause problems. I don't have any specifics on that, so you may want to look into that too. randy48 01-11-2001, 02:19 PM McAfee is garbage! The only way they stay in business is because that's all the government buys it, and you know how ignorant they are! Norton is so-so, the BEST AV protection is AVP! http://www.avp.com Get it for $39.00 and get free updates weekly for life and not have a fear! Just make sure after you install it to go through the setup and set it up the way you want! daveleau 01-11-2001, 03:56 PM No comparison.... If you want your PC to work ok, use Norton If you want your PC to quit booting up, use McAfee (I have always had severe system problems when installing McAfee products starting with versions in 97 to present) I use Ontrack's utilities. They are not hogs, they do not suck respources and are much better at fixing Windows registry problems. If you only care about AV, use AVP. If you want a firewall, use Sygate. If you want utiities, use Ontrack. If you want a reg fixer, use Regclean. Dave Graham 01-11-2001, 03:56 PM No axe to grind here, my company (very large UK communications company), has just started using McAfee, after years of another well known one (not Norton). G rock8785 01-11-2001, 04:25 PM I have Mcafee, I think that it works great! I havent had any problems with it. I got it like two years ago, but I keep it updated. I did have to get a separate trojan scanner when I had one, but I dont get much virus' anyways http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. Is Mcafee a respectable product? darrelld 01-11-2001, 04:57 PM I use McAfee and it's a pain in the ****. It's hard to configure, rarely installs right the first time, and hogs rescources. The only time I run it is to do a manual scan, other than that it is off. I think the only reason they update their software is to get you to spend more money. Rarely is an upgrade better than a previous version, and in many instances it is buggy and worse. Their installer gives you an interface to only install the optiions you want, but if you don't select them all it won't install. I was forced to install everything and then go back and disable the features I didn't want. I personally have not tried Norton, but have played with it on someone elses machine, and from what I can tell it isn't much better. I'll keep using McAfee until they want me to upgrade, then I will find something else. NDC 01-11-2001, 05:06 PM http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/002970.html DVNT1 01-11-2001, 05:43 PM I use McAfee and it works fine for me. It has had a few quirks along the way but they've gotten worked out so far. Like learning to specifically disable network drive file scanning, eliminating the startup scans, and when installing to remove all items except VShield (which is all I need in my environment). I also use their Enterprise SecureCast for automatic updates of the engine and the definitions (without any problems there). I'm able to update PC configurations easily over the LAN, so no complaints there. I especially like the ease of centralized alerting. I receive an email and a network alert when any client PC finds a virus. The biggest problem I have is the timeliness of virus definitions at times. It may be bloated or garbage to some, but it works well for me in my enviroment. sirwolfie 01-12-2001, 12:11 AM I am getting a new system. Plase share what info on best over all protection and management between these two and possibly Wintools (?) Thank you so much for all the info recieved. SysOpt.com
