As of yesterday I had my plexwriter 12/10/32a as the slave on my secondary ide with my old CD/DVD drive as the master. (I have two hard drives on my primary ide controller). Plextor "copy" software was telling me that I could not use the cd/dvd as the source drive to copy cd to cd because the cd/dvd drive was old technology and did not write fast enough. What else is new. The software message recommended that I just use the plexwriter and write to image and then write image to disc. Whats the point I want to save time and not swap discs.
So I went out today and bought a new Memorex 48x internal ide drive. I removed the old cd/dvd drive and installed the new Memorex cd-rom drive. I did change the plexwriter to master and the cd-rom to slave on the recommendation of plextor in their manual. I also changed the master slave settings correctly on the back of each drive. I also put the master plexwriter on the end of the ribbon and the cd-rom drive on the second attachment.
Finally to my problem. The CD writer will only write at 4x on a disc to disc copy. What's up? I bought the d*** thing so I wouldn't have to wait 20 minutes.
Thanks in advance Obie Wans.

Sometimes, if the original cd that you are trying to copy has a copyright on it, depending on how well the security is, it will take a while for the cd to burn.
What are you trying to burn? A game or just music, maybe software? Music cd's ought to burn the quickest out of those. If you use programs like CD-Clone to copy a game, a lot of times, the reading process takes forever because it reads it at 1x while it writes at 12x or depending on how fast your burner is, this is the process as far as I know for cd copying.

What speed are the CDRs that you are using? You must you 12x CDRs to copy at 12x. You're probably are using 4x CDRs.

what software are you using to burn?? im pretty sure that the demo version of nero only lets you burn at 4x rather than whatever your burner is capable of.......just a thought......

Not all CD-ROM's are created equal. Many will not do DAE (digital audio extraction) accurately; others will do it but much slower than their "rating". Others won't do it at all. Check this link for tests of CD-ROM's

Be patient while you burn. Take a coffee break. Watch the birds. Enjoy life. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
BTW, did you notice the chart was looking for drives capable of 8X burning?

DUD nailed it!
The memorex only does 6x DAE. The plexwriter only writes at 12 or 8 or 4, so you're stuck with 4x.
You should take the memorex back and buy a CD-ROM with DAE speed higher than 12x (at least!) for 12x CD-CD copying.
By the wayn the data read rating 48x does not say anything about the digital read speed (DAE) of the drive. Ask before you buy.

Thanks to all that responded. I will check out the site and see which drives support 12x DAE or better and return my Memorex. I hope that solves it.

Be sure to go to the link I provided for accurate info on possible CD-ROMS for your purpose. Notice the Plextors at/ near the top of the list?
