There are a few good answers to be found on the BBS at linuxnewbie - but I can tell you that the Asus A7V works just great.
Right now I am answering on an Iwill VD133 running Mandrake Linux 7.2 and it works just fine (as you can see).
I recommend that you stay away from the boards with integrated video and sound. The i810 seems to be a real problem child with Linux.
Most video cards are supported by the newer versions of Linux, but nVidia, ATI, and Voodoo cards seem to work best (in that order), a Genuine Creative Labs Sound Blaster is probably most compatible with Linux. If you use a modem by all means get an external serial modem.
Good luck - see you over at www.linuxnewbie.org (http://www.linuxnewbie.org) CMonster is there!
