Well the top spot is easy:

Baldur's Gate 1/II, (also Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale etc.)

Then Fallout 1/2 (Great post-apocalyptic RPGs)

and Homeworld brings up third.

---I'm hoping to find a place for Morrowind on that list sometime in the not too distant future.

It's not that I hated it, it's just that it didn't seem like a big improvement over Red Alert. IMHO, I thought Red Alert was an improvement over the original C&C, and that Red Alert 2 was an improvement over Red Alert. Tiberian Sun played the same as the other games, but it still felt like a step back from Red Alert. Plus I didn't dig the sci-fi setting.

1) Starcraft - Still play every couple nights.
2) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (original on NES) - I must have poured thousands of hours into that game as a kid.
3) Super Mario Bros - Still play whenever I drink too much.

----------

On another note, what makes a game you enjoy?

I like games that are hard, but not so much you get discouraged. Remember that "Dragons Lair" arcade game. You paid like 50 cents to die in 3 seconds. That sucked. Online games are usually good since playing against other people there is usually someone better than you so it stays kinda hard. TMNT was also really hard.

At the other end of the spectrum I also like games that are easy enough you can just kind of mindlessly do them while doing other things. Mario, Rampart, Windows Solitare, Contra (with the Konami code), GTA3 all fall into that category.

I don't usually get addicted to games that are in the middle or don't really have a goal. RPGs, Diablo, most flight sims (although Gunship2000 rocked) don't do much for me... What about y'all?

flyingV

Tiberian Sun have great improvement over the graphics, but the gameplay are somewhat "uninteresting".

Well, I bought the game when it just came out. Didn't even play through it. Even with the high-end computer I have now I don't even want to play it much. Just keep waiting on the series.

A l i e n s V e r s u s P r e d a t o r

Looking at the game closely to see its faults is quite hard because of its speed and unbelievable hardness.
If your looking for an alternative to Quake/2/3 or Unreal,
your in the wrong place.
This game is for fast reflexes, good hand-eye coordination, and most of all, a good deal of patience.

I don't think you can easily give a definitive answer. There's just so many games out there and gaming platforms!

But..there are some games I still come back to.

PC:

#1 Interstate '76

This game is just pure fun. There is hardly any time limit - you just drive a car around thousands of square miles of desert - hunting baddies down and blowing them to bits.

The whole way this game is put together - despite being old now - is just class. It's got a very convincing 70's theme to it and the characters are very convincing. It's also got some great humor to it. If you love the muscle car this game is tops; you really do get a feel for slamming a V8 down a long Nevada highway! The physics are very accurate and intuitive, and the sounds are excellent.

I like the way this game encourages you to explore, to try and pull off a few stunts and just have fun. The scope of this game lasts more than a few hours due to of it's sheer scale number of car/ammo variants. It also offers LAN and WAN options (if you can still find a host, sob).

If you love driving games you will find this a real gem. More than just a quick blast.

#2 Jedi Knight II

Ace! This game's so good Mr. Lucas could have made another film out of it.

From the excellent graphics (make sure Direct 3D is enabled), to the surround sound and brilliant gameplay, Jedi Knight II puts the player right in the heat of the action. It's right up there with the likes of Quake and Unreal.

The variations in scenario are also very convincing; you're taken from death stars to imperial cargo freighters, right through to other planets and its sheer scale means you'll be on it for months.
The characters are very well thought out.

The only downside I can think of, it that like Quake the gameplay can seem fairly linear at times, but every so often the player comes across a set of puzzles to complete or platforms to get across so all is not lost.

An awful lot of development time must have been spent on this game and it certainly shows. Any Star Wars fan should not be without it!

3# Carmageddon

A bit dated now, but a great title for those stress-busting moments when you need to let off steam!

You basically drive about completing courses and obliterating every other driver as well as pedestrians. Some courses are massive and there's a huge array of vehicles to fight.

Things to note about this game are: 1) Get the uncut version so that the zombies look like Zombies and splatter accordingly and most importantly 2) Use the cheat! Without the cheat this game would simply be too frustrating. But use the cheats to freeze the time limit and fix your car and the scope of this game suddenly transforms your experience.

The variations of car damage and the car's physics are very good, and the driver can - by earning credits - soup his machine up so high that it becomes almost indestructible! You'll need it on the later levels though, as the police reinforcements and other drivers get real nasty.

One of the best parts of this game are the stunts you can pull off. You're actively encouraged to drive off the rooftops and ram other cars of the face of the planet. There level designs are also very well thought out. The gore and violence are nowhere near as bad as people make out, either.

The only downside is the graphics. The game needs a very fast CPU to run, especially if you choose the Hires option. However there is a Voodoo version.

It's mindless mayhem of the most enjoyable caliber! :-)

CONSOLE'S

#1 GTA III (PS2)

Unlike most of the console games these days, Grand-Theft-Auto III has enough to keep you hooked for ages. You just go around town stealing cars and causing general mayhem as best you can - you don't have to do the missions if you don't want to.

This game has great grafix, brilliant music and is extremely comical in its execution.

The vehicles you steel really look and sound like they're being battered to pieces and there's some clever PS2 FX used when you pull off a nifty stunt. The level design is also complex enough not as not to bore the pants off you after 10 min's playtime.

You'll find it hard to put this one down. Brilliant.

#2 Need-for-Seed (3D0)

Forget the PSX/PC versions - this was the first and best version of this realistic driving sim. The way the cars handle (and crash) is extremely realistic, and the whole thing is recorded in surround sound with "sampled" engine noises.

The game levels are few in number, but the grafix more than make up for it.

Want to know what it feels like to take a Ferrari Testorosa round a blind bend at 200 MPH? Get this!

The company that produced this game (Electronic Arts) also made the 3D0 version of Road Rash. Both these games are gems: very well polished and unmatchable on any other platform. Forget the other platform versions.

#3 Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (Import version - Megadrive)

Proves you don't need to get knee-deep in 3D to play a good game. Basically a platformer, put together very well. The graphics and sound are excellent.

Written in the days when gameplay mattered!

Well, these are my favorite games. Sorry for the rather lengthy review! :t

The only game that I know of which can take advantage of SMP is Quake 3 Arena:

http://www.quake3world.com/demo/teamarena.html

To enable SMP support, bring down the console with the ~ key and type the command:

\r_smp 1

Follow this command with:

\vid_restart

Frankly, SMP if not the best way to approach gaming. It's actually slower than single-CPU. If you can use SMP for another program, however, it's a keeper!

One thing I hate about civ3 is you can have a tank attack a archer.

Why the hell would it be like that in history. The computer usually never had old units in Civ 2. and Lenoardos workshop upgraded all you guys if you built it so you moved along to age to age with everything upgrading. So in 2000AD you dont have 300 archers 400 spearmen and 200 warriors. That really make me mad.

I sent them an email stating that they need to add a realism factor units for 2 ages ago, should automatically lose! This being the fear factor! If a modern warship cruised up to a Trieme in open waters the sound of a 16" Cannon going off alone would scare the PEE out of the sailors on the Trieme, let alone a calculated near miss would flip the thing. I called it the morale factor.

Why didn't I like GK3? I think too much time was put into them new fangled 3d graphics and not enough time into story. I'm a story kinda guy, plots are what keep me gripped. GK2 had a wicked plot! GK3 kept saying, but look at the 3d graphics!

Well, it all started with RoadRash, I tried some flightsimulators - never really liked them (too much time to learn) - and then ther was a game called Quake. Ever heard of It?? :) :)

Nowadays I donīt play very much, but if I do, preferably bike/car-simulators and Strategy. NOT Quake...

You never know. You RAM may help out your slower CPU and you video card is over minuim as is your RAM. ALl that is lacking is your CPU. Mabey look around the net and see if anyone else is running it on a setup similar to yours.

I would say you have a 75% or higher chance of getting it to run so you can play . My friend can play and he has less in the Video area but more RAM. I owuld say give it a shot.

if i didn't say it earlier i love:

American Mcgee's Alice

based on Quake 3's engine, it has exalent graphics. Very twisted and new plot compared to the Disney like image we think of when we hear Alice. This is a true adventure game.

P.S. Adventure = a RPG and a FPS mixed, or a FPS that acually has a plot. ;)

Half-Life............. The game is bein beatin with a with a monkey on a stick, isn't it dead yet (i don't mean the monkey), I admittedly have all the half-lifes, and enjoyed it, but its time to let the game go, next to Quake3, the only thing I think half-life has runnin for it now is its' mods, but even they're seeming to get weak... but that is my 2bits.......

how did you get Silver to use your voodoo2 when iwas usin my ol 233mmx, all i had for a primary dispaly was an ati 1mb, with my voodoo2 12mb, it always used my 1mb, so it was unplayable (so iplayed the game on my older 133 with a 2mb ati) I would put my voodoo 2 back in anways if there was XP drivers for it...........
but anyways, so how did you get it to use yur voodoo 2 for curiosity sake?

well i would presume your 1mb card didnt help :)

I had the voodoo 2 12mb and a matrox 4mb i think it was, or maybe 8 mb... anyway it worked and it was great... then i got my GF2... :(

Ah well, i hope they release Silver 2... unlikely but hey.

Silver was another one of those games that didn't get the credit it deserved. In that case it prevents there from being a #2... That game would be extremely awesome in a full 3D world, Unlike the Prerendered backgrounds, and directdraw characters... Still a kewl game though...

****... we are talking about the best games, the legends... Quake3  C&C  ... ConterStrike  ... God damnit... Diablo??? letīs speak seriously....
The best games on the categories that I like

Rpg: Phantasy star 1 (master system) although I loved to play Chrono Trigger (snes), but we are talking about the legends... The final fantasy series on famicon could be a good choice... but I never played any final fantasy

Shooting: Wolfestein 3d or doom 1 (although Unreal Tournament is my favorite... Im sooo nervous to get my UT2003)

Strategy: Warcraft I and II of course... no comments about that (Although Starcraft nowadays is the best strategy game. Some say that starcraft is "better" than warcraft.... its a hard question to answer... I think that warcraft deserves the award cos it opens the doors for realtime strategy game)

Fighting: Street Fighter series. Please I dont wanna here any Mortal Kombats fans replying my opinion... Street fighter is the best without the shadow of a doubt

So... these are the legends in the categories that I play... Jesus, I had to reply... here... so many teenagers talking ****

dont get me wrong xeagle, I have been playing games since '89. Some of the best I ever played were the zelda's, marios, final fantasies, chrono series. Wolf 3d was awesome, counterstrike is the game I have been playin nonstop since march 02. Street fighter at the arcade was a money pit for me when I was 11. Shadowrun was excellent, as was Halflife, the xcom series, sega sports series for the next-gen consoles, etc. Too many to name. But many ppl didnt read the title of the topic closely enuf, it asked you to choose 1 game in particular.

And the best game I have ever played has got to be Fallout 2, it had insane replayability, and the fact that you could finish the game as a child murdererin, slave runnin, grave diggin, drug dealer or as a champion of the people made it all tthe better.

I encourage all of you to buy the Fallout 1/2 value pack for $10 and try them out.

Monkey Island series, especially 1 and 2. Grim Fandango was pretty cool. Lode Runner, played that on an Atari computer. But I remember back in the day, there was one game that had me so hooked that I burned out the monitor. Huh? Long, long time ago, more than 15 years. I was playing Rogue and I kept on playing it even though the monitor went on the blank. Had to turn it off and then on again so I could see. Didn't have a computer back then. Was using a relative's. When I finally did get my first computer around 1988/1989, got NetHack and played that for ages.

My favourite is Total Annihilation. im suprised nobody has it on there lists. anyone played it? Its kinda like starcraft and C&C series but the way the resources are setup is unique to any other game.

TA was a nice change from the usually rts games at the time and its aged really well, i still play it online and its still addictive, shame they went bust and dont release any new units anymore.

Oh fav game is counter-strike the half-life mod, cant get enough of it!

TA was heralded as a great new thing, but as i cant stand RTS's i largley ignored it as i do all others, in fact the only two "strategy" type gfames ive actually played to any extent AND enjoyedare:

Myth II: Soulblighter
and
Black and white

...as they are non too heavy on resource collecting and all that cr@p.

Id reccomend em both - especially Myth II if you like a challenge from your games at later levels :)

yeah but couldnt get on with black and white, too many little fiddly things to do, like keeping the villigers happy

My favorite gam of all time is the Thief series: Thief: The Dark Project, Thief Gold, and Thief 2: The Metal Age. I even make missions and levels, which can be downloaded at www.thief-thecircle.com.

I quite enjoyed the thief demo's i played, but as it wasnt a commercial success over here, ive never seen any of the games in the local EB or Game or whatever it is this week :x, even though theyre both on budget release...

yeah, you might say that it was kind of an underground game. I only know one other person who has it. I think it would have been more successful had they made an ad campaign, because it's a great game.

I played it, at least the first one, it was very good.

I may put it back on my system again.

Thanks.

I thought Thief was a winner too, but like Jakk, I couldn't find the full version anywhere. I was hoping to find a "gold edition" thief 1 and 2 in a discount bin somewhere, but this too never appeared. Loved the demo, never could find the **** game.

Favorite game of all time? Ultima III. I finished it on the C64 and wrote to Lord British who sent me back a fine, cloth poster and a nice, personally written letter. It wouldn't stand up now, but back then I was 10 and this game did it all!

A few years ago in deepest darkest Japan my wife and I got hooked on Gabriel Knight 2: the beast within. It's the only game we've ever played together and we both remember it fondly. Back in University it was Privateer - a good game I played to the end. Various others (warcrafts, starcrafts, Baldur's Gates) did well but it wasn't until the late nineties that I did Planescape: Torment when I found another gem.

I wanted to put NWN in the greatest of the generation pile but it didn't cut it for me. I'm hoping to try Morrowind next week and I'll see how that goes. RTCW is my current addiction but that twitch and jerk adrenalaine stuff gets thin real quick - what's got me hooked on this one is online play - never tried it before - killing real people is so... satisfying:r

Hey, 20 years of playing games on dozens of different platforms, did you really expect me to just choose one?:)

Yup, it's a great game, thief is. you can buy it on the internet, I think. Have you tried www.dragon.ca? also, try amazon.com.
