The Pioneer is a few bucks cheaper than the Toshiba. The only thing faster in the Toshiba is that it's 48x CD but access time is slower than the Pioneer in both CD and DVD. Which DVD-ROM drive should I buy?

Can ya listen to em by any chance???
Will it be close to you while you are watching dvd's?
Noise from the drive could be a consideration if so...

My brother has a Pioneer 16x DVD in his T-Bird 900 and it's loud, about as loud as my crappy Asus 50x CD-ROM drive that I'll be returning tommorrow.

Used two Toshibas and liked them both (4x and 12X DVD). I would recommend them but have not heard and cannot compare them to Pioneers.

I like my Pioneer alot. It's my only drive in my system. But I wouldn't want to watch a quiet movie straight from it. I think that would go for any drive though. HDs are so much more quieter. But it is not loud, just when there is no other sounds in the room you can hear it and it gets annoying. I wouldn't replace it though.

Go for the PIONEER:

it's very fast as a DVD and CDROM (with really low access that will make a difference). It'll read anything! the 40x to 48x difference will not show at all, believe me the pioneer will outperform the toshiba in day to day use due to the low access time.

Also the toshiba does POOR DAE (2-3x) while the Pioneer is locked at 12x. if you intend to use the drive for cd copying the Pioneer is the way to go (up to 8x burning).

Also the pioneer has a slot which is far better than the tray.

Slot all the way! Those are so cool! Once I get some money, I am going to get the Pioneer.

If you're watching a movie with the volume at a "reasonable" level (of course!), I doubt you would notice noise, if there was any. I don't own it, so I don't know.
