What do you think the greatest FPS is of all time, and what platform?

Half Life, hands down, no contest, period, finito! It wasn't just a game, it really changed everything. This game was from 1998 and is still alive today...amazing.

Sure Quake and all those old FPS were ok cuz they started it all but as for best no way.

UT is king today and in ways a better game than HL in multiplayer with the tons of options but HL was better all around game.

Quake, ok its faster, but I never liked the game.

Well, I somewhat agree.

But still, more is coming, and we cannot say what is best of all time. MAHOO is definitely better than others on graphics and gameplay, but one just cannot compare a game from four years ago with a game in now time

Funny this subjected showed up here. I had this conversation with a couple co-works a couple days ago. I told them System Shock2 was my personal favorite ***single player*** FPS of all time. If you have played the game, then you will know why I think this. Half-life had one heck of a story, but it didn't have a story ***AND*** atmostphere like system shock2. I may start a thread about that game.

oh, memories :)

Memories indeed :)
SS2 was one of the first games to take REAL advantage of DOS protected mode and 4MB (yes, FOUR :) ) of RAM, which I did once have with my 386DX-40MHz :D
As for the BEST FPS ... anybody here heard of DOOM ?! ;)
First Quake was nice but NOTHING compares to DOOM :D

Slipknot

Doom was good ND, but Doom II started the BIG rush

Three names :
Wolf3D
Doom
Quake
Each one of them made it into a new level of gaming. Since Quake games are only getting more polygons, nothing really new :(

I don't think I've ever disagreed with ND, but there is always room for a first. Here is couchpotato's original question :

What do you think the greatest FPS is of all time, and what platform?

I agree with you that Wolf3D, Doom and Quake were revolutionary points for gaming industry, but that doesn't make those games the "greatest". If I asked you what the best car ever produced was, would you say the ford model T just because it was one of the first? I doubt it. What about the best US fighter Plane ever produced? The P-51? Only in WWII.
Wolf3D and Doom were games that required you to kill enemy after enemy without to deep of a plot. Even Serious Sam acomplishes this *better* then the 3 games you mentioned.

I'm surprised nobody has said two of the the best of all time, Marathon by Bungie (makers of Halo) and Rainbow six by Redstorm. Two of the most important fps ever made.

I have to say l find it odd no one seems to rate the Alien versus
predator game. It just rocks in the marine mode. Hard to master - yes But definatly a great game.
Try the demo as the lone marine tryin to get to the heli pad for a lift home.

I'm gonna run a thread on this cos l am interested in opinion of this game.

I'd have to say Half-Life. I've had that game for over a year and beat it 3 days ago. Now i'm into Jedi Knight 2:Jedi Outcast. Its a really fun game, if your into Star Wars. Its got some good modding potential if they ever release the SDK.

Deus Ex beats the linear shooters and is the next generation up from System Shock 2 of flexible, atmospheric FPS. :t

Remeber the KF7 Soviet, Man I loved that gun.

The greatest leval in Goldeneye was the Facility(2nd leval)
Reasons

1. Killing scientists
2. watching trivilion die ( or however you spell it)
3. Most important is when in the last huge room with the gas tanks dont blow them let the alarm sound then go up to that room in the back and just sit and camp since the AI was to stupud to open the door to the room you were in. I once got 8000 kills that way. over 6 hours of camping. Kill some guys run down grab ammo and do that cycle over and over again.

RED BARON

Remember the old Atari coin-op Arcade Game "Red Baron"? At least I think It was called Red Baron. It was a vector graphic game in all of its Blue filter overlay glory.

I'd love to find one intact somewhere to shoot down those WW1 Biplanes and blimps.

I believe this came out in 1980 or 81, as it was about same time I graduated.

This game let you move around in 3D, and It was a first person view. I had to call the local game operator as to where I could find my favorite toy after it disappeared from the mall arcade. Was I addicted or what?

My first IBM PC compatible FPS game was DOOM. And I was hooked. I will probably buy DOOM 3 if It ever comes out.

My Favorite = RED BARON

The best FPS game of all time has yet to be mentioned. Oh sure you said Half-Life. I would agree that it spawned from the half-life code.... but the best FPS of all time is none other than your favorite mod and mine... COUNTER-STRIKE!

There is no other FPS shooter that can boast the number of players as Counter-Strike. At any given moment there are over 50,000 players on-line. Download from hundreds of custom maps, skins, bots, and weapon models.

Within a week of release, File-Planet had served up 1.2 million CS1.4 patches. Sorry guys, I must say you all were way off mark if you were to name the best FPS of all time. The numbers speak for themselves.

By the way.... How many games keep their value on the retail shelf as long as CS has? It's been available for $29.99 for 0almost 18 months now. No need to lower prices, it keeps selling strong.
